stock cut springs better?
I got this tech book for x-mas and i was reading through it.
They said its better to have softer springs handling wise because the keep the tire on the ground better... i think they ment more for street use cuz they say its better for street iregularities (sp).
They claim that its better to cut half a coil off your stock springs.. which will increase the spring rate by about 10%... they said though you should only cut the front springs cuz the spring rate doesnt make much difference.. and cut the front ones to lower the car ONLY for aerodynamics and better handling.
they said they did tests with softer springs and harder springs and neither out performed the other.
This doesnt make sense to me... dont you want stiffer springs for better handling? I guess maybe if you have big strut bars? i dont know...

Well... the stiffer the spring the less body roll there will be. (which obviously helps in handling during cornering)
But with stiffer springs your tires will bounce around when they hit imperfections in the road.
This is why you need APEX springs.... they are progressive springs.
They are very nice and soft for the first inch or two of travel and very quickly get hard.
So they absorb small bumps very nicely (better than stock) and yet when the car is really pushed during a corner the springs provide stiffness to keep the body roll under control.
If however you are cornering hard and you hit a bump it will be harsh... just like a stiffer spring.
The APEX springs are not full out race springs but they are a really nice progressive blend of soft and stiff with a nice transition between.

I had cut springs (not anymore), yea they're softer, yea they're bouncier, and yea they're terrible (comparing to Eibach)!! If you hit a bump while taking a corner, as Chris said, your front will start bouncing and the car might even lose traction since not all the wieght is on the front wheels.
I used to hate it, while accelerating, hitting something and from bouncing actually losing acceleration or losing traction on sharp turns.
But then again, half a coil might not be as bad.

we are discussing springs indeed but that can apply on other stuff too... LMAOCHNDROSE wrote:They are very nice and soft for the first inch or two of travel and very quickly get hard.We are just discussing springs right? :P :twisted:provide stiffness to keep the body roll under control.
Sorry, will go away now.

you know if you just cut the springs to the bump stop than itll be nice and firm for you hard guys. but besides that your right the softer springs hold the road softly and the hard springs keep out body roll so you want both.
say your car understeers (if you have a lanos than it does) so the ideal susp. setup would be to have a stiff rear and a soft front which would cancel out the understeer and give a closer to nutreul balance. being that the front grips the inperfections and the rear skips out a tad so if you were to go past your limit you would have a four wheel drift right into a guard rail.
i geuss its not everyones ideal but i like the rear to come out quick to come out faster around cones

And when did Rose become a HE ??
Rose ... is there something you haven't told us? :P Was the operation successful?

Back on topic:
From what I have heard, softer, progressive rate springs and stiffer shicks/struts is the best combination.
I'll find out how my new Apex springs & KYB shocks & struts handle in the not-so-distant future.

I don't know, but in every post he is referred to as a HE, I always found it rather strange... Maybe he's name is Jose and he misspelled it?? lolTheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:HEY!!! She can't steal my title!!! :mrgreen:KnightWalace wrote:I dunno... i think after that he took OZ's title.

well... i had the HE\SHE confusion as i recall one of your posts you said something about your Girl Friend so i assumed you are a HE. my badCHNDROSE wrote:Jose? Methinks not. Or perhaps she just uses the term friend in conjunction with girl, as many women do, when talking about their female friends. Many girls I know refer to their female friends as girl friend just so that people know they are not talking about their guy friends.kinkyllama wrote:maybe shes a carpet muncher... or im sorry... and lesbian.. or maybe just bi
