'02 valve covers downgraded from '99!
I bought a powdercoated valve cover from Shaun (daewooluvr) and it is awesome. I had it on my motor with some performance spark plug wires popping out of it and it looked pretty spiffy. Anyway I blew my motor in Feb and last month had a 2002 motor put in. The mechanics didn't put my badass valve cover and spark wires on it but they gave them back to me so I could do it myself. Last weekend I decided to go ahead and put my stuff on the new engine and I was shocked to see that the valve cover was PLASTIC! I am sure it was very strong plastic but still... they went from nice metal to plastic? whats up with that? My metal one was designed differently and had less holes to bolt up but it still fits perfectly but I was a little disappointed to find out how Daewoo downgraded from 99 to 02. Then I looked at my oil dipstick and saw that it was yellow! O noooo my old one was red and would have matched my valve cover but this new motor has to have a yellow one. I'll get my red one back. Then I thought that the new oil cap looks a lot better than the old one so thats one upgrade... guess what, it doesn't fit! Completely different design. Whats up with all the changes? Are the internals different too you think or was it just a bunch of cosmetic changes to the engine?

The answer for Daewoo's downgrades
$$$$$$$$$$
They did random sh*t like that to save money, the newer Lanos's have plastic thermostat housings that are prone to blow and I guess plastic vavle covers. The interiors also degraded from fairly nice from the earlier SX line to plain gray cloth for newer cars.
Pretty soon, they dropped the options-packed SX line as well.
Luckily, I got one of the good ones .

well... that goes arround here too... i got a '99 lanos and i was inspecting a '05 lanos on sunday and i found out they are using different coolant reservoir that looks like it was made of recycled plastic, exhaust manifold scheild that was made of scrap metal and stupid looking power steering reservoir cap.
also they are using much smaller size injectors that are made of plastic... other than that it looks the same.

I bought my Lanos in December 1998, new, a whopping 25 miles on it. I think it was one of the earliest releases of Daewoos in N. America because it took another 6 months for them to start showing up on roads. I have a metal valve cover, metal thermostat housing, "Art-Deco"ish interior, but Daewoo started losing money because they spent more money trying to make quality vehicles than they were getting back from sales. They then downgraded quality. I don't know at exactly what time because I have seen 2000 Lanoses with the same things I have.

The metal cover fits perfectly on the new motor. It actually uses less bolts (which are actually better designed than the old bolts) to connect than the plastic one does. The gasket was a little different as well but it worked with the metal valve cover. I am just upset that Daewoo downgraded like that. Cars are supposed to get better within years not worse. I hope this motor lasts longer than my old one. Hopefully they didn't downgrade the internals.WooHoo wrote:can you remove the studs that arnt used on the metal cover?? and it fit then?

Bankruptcy will do that. The Daewoo Group had around $70 billion in debt. I think Daewoo Motor alone was struggling with $11 billion, and was kept on life support since somewhere around 2000. I am not suprised to hear of cost cutting in bizarre places towards the end. On second thought, I am. Penny pinching after years of fraud, embezzlement and generally poor management...I am just upset that Daewoo downgraded like that. Cars are supposed to get better within years not worse.
You might be upset about cheaper fabric and plastic parts, but I'm bitter about the whole mess.
I to have a 1998 Lanos but the valve cover is plasticBosnianLanos wrote:I bought my Lanos in December 1998, new, a whopping 25 miles on it. That's not the real valve cover. It's just a plastic cover that protects the spark plugs and wires. The real valve cover is under that and should be metal.flat6 wrote:I to have a 1998 Lanos but the valve cover is plasticBosnianLanos wrote:I bought my Lanos in December 1998, new, a whopping 25 miles on it.
