How to: Electrical System Boost

Post by asam »

Here are several ways to improve your OEM electrical system

1. New Ground Wires
A. Negative battery post to chassis (body)
B. Negative battery or chassis to engine
C. Positive battery terminal to alternator (replace current with larger wire)

This can be done for under $10. I recommend 4 gauge but 2 and 0/1 gauge can be used. Make sure all grounds are clean of dirt and oil. Sodering is also recommended as well as the use of gold terminals.

2. New Battery
A. Starting Battery
1. Use for minor electrical loads. Optima's make a world of difference
B. Deep Cycle
1. Great for high powered stereos

Replaceing your oem battery will help your entire charging system. It will put less strain on your alternator and will help stop dimming with aftermarket stereo systems. My battery of choice is a Optima Yellow Top.

3. Power Cap.

Power Capacitors relieve some pressure off of your charging system. Recommended for High wattage uses. 1 farad for every 1000watts.

This has been a contoversy under under a lot of debate.
A capacitor will discharge in .001 of a second and it then puts a drain on the power system in order to recharge back up to it's previous voltage.
There is more of a delay in recharging than there is discharging, thus adding an unneeded, extra sourse of loss on the overall electrical system.

Most often people use a capacitor as a patch to help reduce headlight dimming that will be relieved by upgrading the alternator positive to battery positive, the battery negative (ground) to body and body to engine block.

I do not recomend adding a capacitor to a stereo system if you have upgraded the wiring and added a sealed gell battery such as an Optima or SVR.

Also, rather than a standard lead acid deep cycle battery for high powered stereo use, a deep cycle sealed gel battery, such as an Optima red top will be a better choice.
A lead acid battery can not be drained flat and recharged to full voltage very many times and still condinue to work to it's optimal capacity.
A sealed gel battery can be drained and charged many times and not be degraded at all.

I hope this helps. :)

The advantages of a yellow top are Deep cycles. If your not going to have very many accesories running thr red top will do just fine. You will definently notice a difference with an optima.

The OPTIMA RedTop

The looks alone generate plenty of buzz. But it's the patented SPIRALCELL? Technology in OPTIMA RedTop batteries that's truly worthy of praise. OPTIMA RedTop batteries are built to withstand the abuse Trucks, SUV's and 4x4's experience on and off-road. SPIRALCELL Technology immobilizes the internal components of the battery, enabling OPTIMA batteries to withstand incredible amounts of vibration.

Vehicles modified for better engine performance demand more from a battery. OPTIMA batteries withstand the high underhood temperatures associated with these Performance vehicles. The sealed cells make the battery spill-proof, even if you install it on its side! This prevents external gassing and leaking which can damage engine components and limit battery performance.

If your battery is used in vehicles that demand extra reliability and performance, or if you just take pride in getting the best performance out of your vehicle, OPTIMA RedTop batteries deliver the performance you demand.

The OPTIMA YellowTop

Demand more from your vehicle? Then get more from your battery. OPTIMA YellowTop batteries are made for the extremes. If you have an extreme vehicle, you expect high performance. Whether your vehicle is made to take the abuse of off-road driving or cranking out decibels, you need more from your battery. OPTIMA batteries with patented SPIRALCELL? Technology deliver that performance. The deep cycle characteristic of this technology coupled with its extreme resistance to vibration provides performance vehicles with the repetitive power they need in a spill-proof package.

If your vehicle has a lot of accessories like running lights, high-performance stereo/AV system, winches, or hydraulics, your vehicle demands more from its battery. OPTIMA YellowTOP batteries provide the extra performance and deep cycling capability that your vehicle demands.

:P LOL ... you forgot to put a note a the bottom where you copied that.

That post should help a lot of people out. Thanks :)

I mentioned SVR sealed batteries, which have better output numbers than the Optimas, but are a little more expensive.
Also, some cars may not be able to fit some of the SVR batteries because a few of their line are a little taller than an OEM battery and the hood may not close.
