DOHC 16 valve head swap for a 1.5 SOHC

Any body ever successfuly swapped a DOHC 16 valve on their 1.5 SOHC 8 valve?? i have seen some 1.5 DOHC 16 valves engines and i was wondering if a swap for my SOHC is possible.

it seems like a very nice mod to do, the 1.5 SOHC 8v got 86 HP whereas the 1.6 DOHC 16v is said to have 110 HP (even more than the 1.6 DOHC 16 v...is this correct?) so i am very tempted to do that.

i wan't to know if anyone ever done it, what things you have to change within the project and is it worth it in means of added power and cost?

Both engines are using the same headgasket, so mechanically I do not see a reason why this would not work.

You would need to get a complete cylinder head with the intake/exhaust and all the auxillaries, as well as the crank pulley (might be different) and the belt tensioners.

This would be a very interesting project.

Are there 16V available where you live? Perhaps you could find a complete engine from a smashed daewoo?

there an engine on ebay i just seen it yesterday

the only 16 valves head arround here are for the 1.6 and 2.0 engines... those don't fit my engine.

also owr laws prohibit swapping engines unless you put the same engine size so i am stuck with my 1.5 forever... no body said it has to be a SOHC though :twisted:

probably i will have to import the head from somewhere else, of corse customs and shipping will be expensive not to mention the lack of spare parts to maintane this head.

i will have to check with my mechanic for the availability of a 1.5 16 valve engine here somewhere or else i will have to import every spare part i need for that head.

what about the engine managment?? will my current ECU manage the modified engine with no problems or should i get a new ECU that runs a 1.5 with 16 valves head? actually this is my main concern 'cause i am sure such ECU will cost a fortune... maybe as much as the head itself.

The 1.6L 16v head should fit your 1.5L as they're both "small blocks". You will need not only the head but the crank pulley, cam belt tensioner pulleys, intake and exhaust manifolds, ECU etc. You will need to check valve to piston crown clearences during assembly. It is quite likely that you'll need to either machine valve reliefs in the top of your pistons or swap them for the 16v ones.

the project is attainable indeed, a friend of mine have done it

we took off the head of a busted 1.6 DOHC engine and bolted it to the 1.5 block... fits like a glove

replacements included crank pulley, oil return tube from head to sump, water pump and alternator shroud... also a connection from ECU to VGIS actuator was required

car performance was enhanced indeed... this really works

the downside is: the cost of the project is almost as much as the cost of a decent 1.6 DOHC... so it is much more effort saving to drop in a 1.6 DOHC rather than upgrading a 1.5 SOHC to 1.5 DOHC
