Capacitor

If you disconnect your cap do you have to re-charge it or something ?

If you are going to store it for any time, it is a good idea to bleed the powe in it off .... you can use resistors or even a light bulb to do that.

When you first got it, did you have it professionally installed or did you install it yourself?
If you installed it yourself, it should have come with a resistor that you put in series with the positive terminal so it could charge up before using it.

I've heard that sticking your tongue accross the terminals is the correct way to discharge a capacitor.

Sorry.... I just couldn't resist.

Yeah i came with the stuff to charge it but i took it to the shop anyways.. they told me i wouldnt be able to install it myself and they just kept the stuff to re-charge it.. which i didnt realize at the time. I hate audio express...

So how can i charge it then?

You just need something to use as a resistor to slow down the charge that is used in line between the positive wire and the positive terminal on the capacitor.

LOL ... Several years ago when I was at my parent's house doing some car audio stuff, I couldn't find any resistors, so I just used a 60 watt house light bulb in line with it. It worked just fine. The capacitor charged in about 10 minutes. I kept checking with my DMM to verify it wasn't charging too fast and when the voltage was almost equal to that of the battery, I knew it was safe to connect. :)
I didn't even take the bulb out of the lamp. I just twisted and taped wired to the prongs on the end of the lamp cord.

Yeah Erfinder ... let's just SEE you put a 1 farad cap on your tongue! LOL

i guess Erfinder's head will light as strong as the bulb you used Cliff, his hair will be sticking up like nails and his eye balls will be forced out of their sockets... how do i know that?? i once touched a broken electrical socket and got electricuted by a 220 volt

asam .... excellent find!

kinkyllama ... read those pages and it will explain what you want to know.

Any Radio Shack will carry the resistor you need.
Go in and ask for a 50 Ohm 1 watt resistor.
Even at Rat Shack's outrageous prices, this *should* cost less than $2.

Crispy fried tongue anyone??

I bet you could go to the local supermarket and get cow tongue.... I'm sure it would work just as well as a resistor.

Cliff
Will a one watt 10ohm resistor work?

i really dont know much about this, but doesnt that just mean it will charge slower and the whole point of the resister is so it doesnt charge to fast.. if im right then i think the 10ohm will work fine

thanks a ton guys,
Dan

That should work just fine, you just want it to charge slower then hooking it up directly to a battery.

Well got everything working fine.. screwed the wires on.. then the wire came out of the connecting thingy. So i had to redo it all.. now it doesnt work. Theres no juice in the wires at all though... i put the black and red togather, no sparks or anything...

what the hells going on ?

Im so pissed off becuase i went to 4 different stores for these connecter and the best ones i could fine ended up still sucking but i made them work.
