Throttle Body Coolant Bypass.
I just did this bypass a few minutes ago. I got some new tubing and ran a line directly from the Surge Tank around the engine to the mounting flange on the block.
Apart from being a complete pain in the ass (spilled antifreeze, broke tools, f*cked up hands and fingers severly), because some Korean cretin at the factory put the little clamp on upside-down making it unreachable by human standards, is there any danger to the engine from this mod?
I know the coolant to the throttle body is used to warm up the air at start up, but I live in the good old Sunshine State and it rarely gets below 50 so that isn't an issue. There are 2 sensors in the TB. One I assume measures the temp of the air and then there is another one which I have no clue what it does. If it is the coolant temp sensor...which I don't even know if it is in the TB or wherever else, is there a good chance that I could mess up my engine?
Do the risks outweigh the benefits on this mod? Please answer surely and quickly, cause I have to drive my car tomorrow.

Now I haven't even looked at my own car that close to determine what's what *L*...but from previous cars I've owned and modded, the IAT is usually located somewhere in the intact tract prior to the TB. As for the two sensors you noticed, again from previous cars of mine, one is no doubt the throttle position sensor (TPS) and the other is possibley the idle air control (IAC). And yes I've rerouted TB coolant lines (they're there not to warm the air but to keep the throttle blade from icing up and sticking in cold weather), with no bad effects - didn't really notice any gains either though *L*. i concur Fishbone, i did the same mod... no gains whatsoever but i have the pece of mind that i prevented any extra heat in my TB that i don't need.
as for sensors again you are correct... the upper sensor is the IAC, cleaning that with WD 40 cures some rough idling problems and the other sensor is the TPS, mine went dead last week and the car was idleing at 3000 RPM.

So if I remove the hose that goes out of the engine to the TB and the one that goes to the coolant recipient and replace them with and hose from the engine to the coolant recipient it will lower the heat on the TB. cause i dont need it for starting the car i live in Puerto Rico. it wount damage any part of the engine ???
actauly it wont.... when the car is cold... it will worm up the TB until the car is at Ideal wormth then it will bypass it its self with the thermostat
there is probably no gain in doing this either.. i live where it is really cold.. and i oiled my TB because i thought it could use it.. well i went for a spin and drove about 50 miles and when i stoped my gas pedal was sticking so i poped my hood and put my hand on the CIA and it was ice cold (about 40 - 50' f out side that day) so i pulled the hose off the TB and was playing with the TB and the butter fly. it was so cold that the oils i used wasnt allowing it to move properly so when i got home i cleaned it off and it worked great ever sense.
but what im trying to say is that the heater hose running to the TB didnt keep the TB hot at all so i dont see any reason to bypass it

Absolutley no power gains, but no harm done either.
Possibly the most useful thing that can be done to the intake system of our cars is to take off the breather hose and route another hose to the bottom of the engine. The breather hose in my car spewed so much oil into my intake manifold that all of the vacuum lines were clogged, and EGR tube was 100% clogged. Some degreaser cleaned that mofo up but I had 1/4 in. of dried oil buildup in my Intake Manifold.
I'm still surprised my car ran for so long.

The TB heater has nothing to do with the thermostat... the TB heater gets it?s feed from the main coolant pipe at the back of the engine and it dumps it to the coolant reservoir so the thermostat is not part of that circuit at all.WooHoo wrote:actauly it wont.... when the car is cold... it will worm up the TB until the car is at Ideal wormth then it will bypass it its self with the thermostat

Also the thermostat "OPENS" when the coolant is hot enough so how will it - the thermostat - block the coolant path to the TB when it is open??
Anyways I already have that mod. on my Woo and so far I have no gains from it whatsoever and also my car still runs perfectly as ever... the only benefit from that mod is that it made taking off the TB for cleanup purposes much more easier!

its been a while sence i have looked at the TB or takin it off. about 1 1/2 years now so i dont remember it exactly i jsut remember that the thermostat had a hose running back to the back of the engine..
anyways what i was saying about the thermostat is that it being closed casues more pressure making all the coolant that leaves the engine leave through the small hearter hoses, when it is open there is less resistance so not as much coolant woudl be passing through the tb.. look yourself start your car and look at the hoses into the tank.. very little passes through mine...

There is a hose coming out of the thermostat (front passangers side of engine- Lanos) it is either plastic or metal and has 2 hoses coming out of it. One huge hose that goes to the radiator and a small maybe 3/4 inch hose that goes to the front of the TB. Then coming from the back of the TB there is another hose going to the coolant surge tank. Disconnect the thermostat hose (Little metal compression clip) and the surge tank hose, and get a hose of good length going directly from thermostat to coolant surge tank "bypassing" the TB.
These instructions are for a Lanos as I don't know the exact setup for a Nubira (Unless it is 1.6L).
The job is messy, painful, spills coolant and is not worth it at all. My recomendation... spend some time and money on something that is more useful.
