13s for $1300 Nubira turbo

Post by ls400x »

My Australian Nubira being used for a competition allowing FWD cars only. Challenge is to get in the the 13s for the 1/4 mile for under $1300 including purchase price of the car. Just building it myself. Shooting for 200hp at the wheels. Just thought I'd share the info, maybe it will be useful for someone...Image

Budget so far:
2000 Daewoo Nubira CDX $0 (got it before it went to the crusher, had been overheated and a blown head gasket)
New head gasket and timing set $260
Secondhand turbo, TD05H 16G $120
Found cleaning the interior (-) $4
Secondhand Walbro 255L/hr in tank fuel pump $70
New injectors $160 - http://siemensdeka.com/specsheets/FI114961.jpg
Secondhand "intercooler pipework" $5
Secondhand Navara inlet manifold and wiring harnes $0
Secondhand intercooler $20.55
Secondhand AEM F/IC $250 - http://www.aemelectronics.com/engine...oller-f-ic-12/
Secondhand 100w 230v AC inverter $19

TOTAL $ ugh math

very interesting project. do you have any more details on the competition?

what's with the navara intake and butane tank?
very inventive intercooling pipe too... hahaha

and did you cast the adaptor yourself? it looks like concrete in the first pic of it

Thanks!

Performanceforums.com collective came up with the idea. Basically $1300 total excluding safety equipment and registration, must look relitively legal on the street. This is the second year running, previously it was rear wheel drive.

The Navara inlet manifold was just a source of a few fittings and pipes. The butane gas bottle will form the surge tank for the modular engine bay mounted high pressure part of the fuel system, the original fuel pump will function as a lift pump.

I can't say I personally cast the adaptor, my dad did. I just made a dodgey pattern and drilled it afterwards. It still needs a skim in the mill.

I should have chosen a bed frame with less ladder rungs, annoying to grind off haha

So will the "surge tank" and pump be mounted on the fuse box or is that just for the photo

oh, and I forgot to ask what you're doing for the water and oil lines going to the turbo? and what are you using the inverter for?

I guess I could mount it on the fuse box, but the hole in the bonnet it would require would let rain in :/

Oil feed will probably just tee of the pressure sender, not sure yet, that's an easy job I'll think about further down the track. Oil return directly to the sump. Water I'll take of the high pressure side of the thermostat and return to the low pressure side via a restrictor.

The AC inverter is the one part of a water injection system soon to come.

I think I'll be ditching the engine bay fuel system or a more traditional walbro. Cost me $70 secondhand but it will be worth the hassle saved.

Turbo is now a secondhand $120 TD05h 16g Subaru pattern. Hopefully will be a much better match for the cars goals.

Very creative project... Did you change turbos just because you could? or was there something wrong with the first one?

I burnt my hand heating the exhaust housing up to expand it to re-fit in it's new orientation relitave to the centre. It rolled of the chunk of wood it was sitting on and bent a couple of blades on the compressor wheel. Luckily the TD05 came up for sale as it was cheaper to buy that than replacing the compressor wheel myself and having it re-balanced.

Threw the big 60lb/hr injectors in. Guessed a fuel trim at -66% across the board, started and runs fine. Can't do that with an emanage :P

Seems very straight foward, it fired straight up. It was a bit of mucking around flashing firmware and such and getting it to connect to my laptop initially but the tutorial videos on their website were very helpful.

I haven't had it on the road yet though to give it a shakedown.
