How to identify camshafts for Leganza 2,0L DOHC (C20SED)

Post by Salex »

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to identify the intake camshaft and the exhaust camshaft for C20SED engine (Leganza, 1997). I bought new camshafts and they have following codes on them : first R90400056, GC33, I8, 5 and second R90400056, GC39, H9, 12. I suspect the first is intake and the second is exhaust. Some people say they are identical but I'm sure they're not since after installing the camshaft gears have different positions (The gears were properly installed, "I" and "E" marks are in good order). In the end (after several tests) I have used the second as intake and the first as exhaust. The engine runs almost perfect but there is an unacceptable noise coming from the lifters, which are new ! The noise is heard only when the engine is stoped for 5-10 minutes after running at working temperature and then started again. This may come from a bad oil, but the oil was changed less than 2000km ago (1 month) and it is Valvoline 5W-50. Also, the fuel consumption increased a little, from about 8l/100km (outside cities, highway, freeway) to about 8,8l/100km.

Do you have any ideas or do you know for sure how to identify the camshafts ? The manual refers to intake camshaft and exhaust camshaft, it is nowhere written they are identical :?

is the cam shafts are OEM ones, they are the same. why are you useing 5w50 oil in your car? seems like thta is kinda heavy. better choice would be 10w30, that might be the cause for your noise.

The camshafts are OEM. If they are the same, why do they have different codes ? This is what bothers me ....

5W-50 seems to be a good choice when we have over 40C (in shadow) which means the ground temperature in sun is about 65C-70C. Also, I use to keep the engine between 4000 and 6500 RPM :)

Anyway, you may be right, the oil may be a little to "heavy" since the engine is newly rebuilt, the crankshaft, camshafts, lifters, rings, bearings, oil-pump, water-pump ... everything is brand OEM (GM) new.

the part number is the "R90400056", the rest is the reference to the casting lot.
