Already sad: At higher speeds, steering angle is narrowed (as you don't steer much on higher speed), therefore, pumps sense this as a lower pressure needed for steering column...

You don't jerk much steering wheel at high speed? You don't turn it more then 20 degres? Right? Thats how... Don't jerk much wheel at the low speed and at the first second when you turn much steering wheel it would be stiff and then lightened... As the steering column would require much oil pressure (at the moment you turn the wheel much), the pump would speed-up and give it to you...

You can hear electrical pump doing just that... Driving straight, it is quite. Steer hard it would be loud...
