91 lemans swap help

Post by TommyRegalia »

im in the northern united states, and i was wondering what the most effective engine swap would be for a 91 lemans 1.6l. its carberated, and i want to do an injected swap. i heard that a sunbird gt turbo 2,0l engin and a 96 corrola engine work, but im unsure, as this will be my first real swap, and i was hoping for words of wisdom as to which engine that i could obtain here in tha states that would be most effective, or atleast easy to find. thanks in advance

just some advice... it will be a lot easier to start with a fuel injected model

if you want to go ahead, you will need to swap over the whole fueling system which is a lot more involved than it sounds

for the swap, you will have to be really committed to it (I'm ankle deep in wiring at the moment... lol)
and drop the engine and gearbox from the bottom together... it is definitely worth the hassle

have a look on my swap thread (2.0 into lanos) you might find something of use in there

There are three people you should be talking to on the 91 Lemans, myself, GSE_Turbo and Efrain as we all have the same car and have done multiple swaps to 2.0L

Your 1.6L is not carburated, it is using throttle body fuel injection.

All that needs to be done with the fuel system is to upgrade to a Sunbird fuel pump which will increase the fuel pressure.

The upper model lemans came with the 2.0L and that is the same engine as the Sunbird engines.

The 2.0L 8V turbo from the Sunbird GT is the "LT3" engine good for about 165 hp and it is more than enough to make your lemans very quick.

If you want to go down that road you have to swap the Lemans wiring for the Sunbird GT wiring, which can be a fairly involved task if your not sure what you are doing.

Given you are in the Northern USA your best bet for help is Garrett ( GSE_Turbo ) as he is in Colorado and supplies all the parts you will need, me might even be able to sell you a complete harness to swap the LT3 into your Lemans

I have a 2.0L 16V turbo in my Lemans (known as Optima in Canada ), I bought it from my good friend GSiTurbo ( who is no longer active )

My other car is also a Lemans and it has a 2.0 8V turbo from a Sunbird GT

You can most likely find more information on the J-Body forum as well since there are lots of guys modifying their LT3 turbo engines.

Your Lemans is an Vauxhall Astra MK2 and also known as an Opel Kadett E

They had a huge aftermarket following with thousands upon thousands of modified cars, many of them with turbo engines.

Other places to go are http://www.migweb.co.uk and http://www.astra-mk2.com

Fortunately and unfortunately you will find that there are about 20+ engines that fit in your car, everything from the crappy 1.6 TBI you have to 2.0L 16V turbos to diesel engines

You choice depends upon how much money you want to spend on the project and how much power you want.

your mechanical knowledge will be the deciding factor on how much it will cost, if you know what your doing or have a friend who is knowledgeable and you spend the time to do the research you can probably do a swap for under $1000

I know GSE_Turbo is changing his focus away from his lemans, so odds are he might have a ton of parts to help you out in the process, he may even be willing to do the swap for you.
