so you reckon take the mounts off the gearbox and let it drop down a little and then pull them apart? what about shift linkages?

i'll talk to the mechanic see what technique he reckons
atm i'm liking the drop the whole lot out technique just for the lining up of the gearboxes on the floor... the lanos engine bay is so much tighter than the leganza

Too bad you live on the opposite end of the earth and it costs $1600 to fly to Australia, I'm sure I would enjoy your weather more than mine ( -15 deg C and snow )

it's so frustrating and I'm really worried that I'll end up with two cars that don't work

I guess I can start with the wiring side of things while I'm waiting for the mechanical, I was surprised all the connectors are the same, should make things a bit easier

it's so close... I've only loosened the rear mount and taken off the front G.box mount. Maybe I should take the rear mount off too, I'm just scared I won't be able to locate it when putting it back...

i took the rear mount off and it still isn't coming
the gearbox is dropped to the point of tension on the clutch hose and the engine/alternator pulley is still catching on the guard

you should actually have the greabox up more and pulled as close to the left side as possible.

I HATE BALL JOINTS!

Managed to get one outer tie rod ball joint popped. The 2 lower joints and the other *brand new- one week old* outer tie rod do not want to co-operate.
Have tried hammers and hinge type ball joint separator (which popped the first tie rod end).

SO frustrating, I just want the mechanical side of this to be done so I can start the spaghetti jigsaw puzzle of wiring.

I wish my lower ball joints were replaced in the past so they'd just be bolted on... NO, I had to have a low mileage car with riveted on LBJs

it's pretty easy, use the lanos harness tho, you can completely remove the lanos harness without pulling wires through the firewall. just stip all the plastic covers on the loom first. with the loom and the motor out of the car you can simple make all your connections, take the slack outta some of the wires and cover everything again.You will need to extend the wiring to the trottleand a couple things on the back of the motor (just the EGR I think). this car has to be the easiest car I've every had to re-wire.

yeah i know, i was surprised to see all the connectors were the same

i was thinking about using the leganza loom because it has the knock sensor and EGR connector already on it and then just adding fuel and ignition relays to the outside of the lanos engine fuse box
and the positions of wires on the ECM plugs are slightly different too right? (e.g. fuel pump relay: 1.5l = b6, 2.0l = a12).

so you reckon use the lanos harness and not worry about the extra relays and then just add the wires and connectors for knock and EGR?

dang, that's were I really can't help. the 1.5 was never an option in the states. the 1.6 has the knock sensor and the same EGR as the 2.0. I was even planning on using the 1.6 computer on the 2.0 for a short time.

I really shouldn't try to help. I apologise, if the 1.5 is different from the 1.6 then there is no way for me to know.

the mechanic popped the three ball joints and dropped the engine and gearbox in under 10 mins...
so frustrating that it happened so quickly after what happened at the end of last week, lol

was the 1.6 available in the lanos out there? could you get a harness from that? you would be looking at "plug and play" situation in that case.
