Espero Speed Sensor

Post by Melanie May »

The engine warning light in my Espero (1996 model) started coming on intermittently, but now comes on all the time - after about 5 minutes of running the car. This causes the car to idle at a much higher rate - particularly noticeable when in neutral or park - so when travelling in slow moving traffic the car does tend to run hotter than normal. I was told that a fault in one of the two speed sensors on the gearbox could be the problem. Could this be the cause? I am having difficulty finding anyone here who can help because of the age of the car.

Since your malfunction indicator light (MIL) is ON there is a error code stored in ECU memory.
Knowing this error code can help you finding the problem.

Reading error code can be done at workshop or by shorting A&B of ALDL connector's terminals prior to switch ignition ON without starting engine. Note the code(s) from the blinking MIL.
All codes are repeated 3x. First and last code are 12. (12= flash, pause, flash, flash)

Search forum/internet for "ALDL paper clip"

Hope it helps,
