VERY High Consumption on 2000 Lanos

Post by kwame »

My wife's 2000 lanos gets about 150 miles to the tank. CEL is not on. Diagnostics do not reveal any problems. New plugs, filters, oil etc.
Acceleration is very poor. Do not want to spend on IAT and O2 sensors if that might not be the problem.
Been suggested i change the ECU since that may well be the cause.
Interestingly when i pull the socket off the IAT, CEL comes on but the car accelerates better and even consumption improves a bit, even though still far from normal. Help!!!

mileage is currently 80,000 miles but some vendors adjust the mileage before selling the cars so may be more

get the car scanned and watch the O2 sensor readings... if it is flicking between 200 and 800 then it is working fine... if it is flicking on a much smaller range of readings or giving a constant value then it is bad and needs replacement

does your car take some time to start if you leave it off for 30 minutes to 2 hours?
does your spark plugs come out black as hell?

if the answer is yes to both questions then you have leaky injectors

when you turn off the engine for 30 minutes to an hour and then try to restart it it will take some cranking to start
when it does start it will sputter a bit and give out some black smoke
after 5000 kms the spark plugs will be covered with black deposits

No Richie. I am very particular abt oil service, filters and plugs.
I discovered my injectors were leaking. Changed them today. Replaced O2 sensors and CTS. Had to crank a while to get started but since replacing the injectors today, has been starting fine. Filled up wit premium fuel. Will report when i empty the tank on what MPG i got. By the way, since replacing the injectors, car pull a bit slowly on gentle acceleration. Have to floor the pedal sometimes to get the gears to change. Its an auto
