Broken timing belt :(

The timing belt in my 2002 Lanos silver broke last week. What irritates me is it was supposed to be a 150,000 mile belt and it broke with 97,000 miles on it.

What upsets me even more is I had the new timing belt kit (tensioner, pulley, water pump & seals) in a box on the back seat of the car and had an appointment with the local garage to replace it all. The belt broke 6 days before it was supposed to go get the work done.

I should have a repair estimate from the garage tomorrow.

If I supply a good cylinder head (which I have) and if the pistons are not damaged, all the work should only be $650, which isn't too bad.

for that price, couldn't you just find a working engine to swap in?

It's not the first belt.
I replaced the factory original belt at 63,000 miles with a belt that was supposed to last 150,000 miles. The replacement belt broke at 97,000 miles instead of lasting to 150,000 miles like it was supposed to.

Also, I am not going to have the garage do the work. Since I am pulling a good head from an engine that has other problems, I have seen that I can in fact swap the head and replace the timing belt and all the other parts (water pump, tensioner, idler pulley, etc.) my self at home.

Is there some special trick to get the cylinder head off the block?

Everything is removed from the head, but it won't move at all.

Intake & exhaust manifolds, timing belt, water pump, and everything I can see that attaches to the head.

I even have a spare (broken) head that I could look at and match to verify that every bolt was out.

The head is completely free of all bolts, yet it will not budge.

Anyone have any ideas? Is it just stuck on with gasket material?

I know when I removed a head from one of my scrap engines I had to give a good heave to get it to budge. Perhaps try using a pry-bar after you've double checked that all the bolts have been removed.

did you remove the bolts from he black shield on the timing belt side of the engine? also there is a bracket the hooks from the bottom end to the head on the back of the engine. Think it is only 2 bolts

try to put back the intake mani again and use it as a liver to yank the head off the block

I'd love to see a belt manufacturer that will make a true 150K mile belt and guarantee it for that long.....

9 months, 5 days later ... I have my Lanos back from the shop and it's running very well
...

Long story short:
I bought all the needed parts to rebuild the engine and took them to the garage as the parts came in.
They rebuilt the engine.
I paid them almost $1,300 AND bought/supplied all the parts.
When I got the car back, it had terrible bottom-end crank knock that sounded like a metal bucket being beaten with a hammer.
I threatened to take them to court.
They paid for a replacement, low mileage, used, 6 month / 6,000 mile warranty engine.
They installed the engine and got the car running nicely.

I got my car back yesterday, 27 June 2011

Now all it needs is to get the front bumper cover back from my friend's paint shop and reinstall it!
I removed it to get the little scrapes and paint chips taken care.

I'm just really happy to have my car back.
Next order of business for it is getting replacement KYB gas shocks/struts, new tie-rod ends & ball joints, new wheels & tires.

It will also go to the paint & body shop to get all the minor dings fixed and have a nice factory 92U silver paint job from a guy who does show-quality paint.

Thats my project list for the rest of this year

Love that car! ... 160,172 miles on the odometer and it still looks almost new inside and the outside still looks quite good ... but not perfect.

I think I'm going to go with 14inch black wheels with a polished lip around the edge of the rim, then get legal dark tint on the glass.
Not going to mess with illegal tint any more after two $86 tickets.
