New 2001 Lanos Sport Owner with some Q's

Post by nathanfortyone »

I'm a Daewoo owner again!

I used to have a 2001 Lanos 4 door which I had from 2002-2006. It was an awesome car, but then I bought a new Volvo and got rid of it.

Well, now a family member is giving me a 2001 black Lanos sport hatchback with 48k miles to use as my 2nd car. It's worth nothing as a trade in, but I know these are good cars! All routine maintenance has been done and the car is in perfect condition, but no major parts have been replaced aside from the drive belt I believe.

From owning a Daewoo previously, I know the timing belt is certainly past due to be replaced.

What other things do you recommend replacing at this time to make this car last for a very long time? :)

Also, I have some concerns about getting it repaired. When I owned my last Lanos, there was still an ex-Daewoo dealer that had a service department that still worked on Daewoo's, but the dealership is now out of business. Can most local mechanics work on these cars, and get parts for them?

Thanks for your help and I'm excited to back with a new Lanos!!

Take it to a local shop that you trust with GM cars, tell them it's virtually identical to a 1991 Pontiac Lemans and you should have no problems.

Quite often it's far cheaper to buy the Pontiac Lemans parts from the local stores, nowadays there are few places to get new Daewoo stuff.

there are several parts that get replaced when that job is done. do a quick search here and it will be there. i think it is in the FAQ section. the idler pulley, water pump and timing belt all come in a group when you get them from the Daewoo web site. that link is probably on here too. change it now!!! you don't have that many miles on it but i thin ktime is a problem since it's a 2001.

My Lanos is an '01 hatchback 5-spd with 182k mi. The timing belt was last changed at 178k (third time since I bought the car new in Sep '01), and the EGR valve at about 180k. Oil has been changed every 3-5k. My drive to work is almost 100 mi round trip and the car gets 36+ mpg. Most parts not available through the major parts stores I can get from a Daewoo dealer in California. Other helpful info listed here: http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtop ... f=21&t=985
