If it helps anybody else out there I isolated this particular fault on our vehicle to the ECM fuse going open circuit.
The fuse in question is found on wall of passenger side footwell.
It is marked F17 15A ECM (IGN) on the little clip-on lid for that fuse block.
Normal colour for 15A mini-fuse is blue.
For those of you that have lost that lid it is (on RHD) fourth fuse up from the bottom on the right side if viewed from the drivers position.
The symptoms were that the car would happily turn over, no engine check light, but would not start.
30 cent fuse and broooom, working like new.
I suspect there is a problem with the wiring loom in the driver footwell that shorts out when the wife gets into the car and 'pushes' her foot into the side or back of the footwell carpet.
Hopefully some of you with 'mystery' no start problems may get some joy from this post.
Please let us know if this helps anybody else out.

Our Lanos is a RHD edition and I can't recall a similar recall in Australia.
Will strip the carpet out and examine the harness in the driver footwell when time permits.
It has to be something in that section - just don't know where.

Re: One solution to Lanos 1.5 turns over but no start
i would say that seems like the most educated guess of your problem. glad you were able to resolve and you pointed out a KEY FACT in your diagnosis. the check engine light.
If you have a crank no start and no CEL chances are there is a pwr or grd issue with the PCM...
