You really just need to remove the upper portion of the timing assembly, remove the timing belt, the cam gear, and you will be able to access it.
In truth I've done it without even loosening the tensioner by just loosening the idler pulley and sliding the belt off. However i recommend you follow the service procedure and correctly remove the belt by loosening the tensioner.
I would also recommend you replace the belt depending on the severity of the leak. Oil will shorten the life of the belt.
