removed thermostst- forgot to check position

Post by johnoo »

Hi
had removed the thermostat from its housing too quickly and forgot to check how it was fitted.
"being tired makes you do stupid things"
does the spring side go towords the head, or sit in the semi ball housing bowl- or whatever its called.

thanks john

thanks MMamdouh
oh oh
i installed it the opposite way round. i assumed the spring side of the thermostat is heated up thus opening it, hence facing inside the head as that would be the hottest.
yesterday put some sealer on the thermostat housing as it was leaking. ended up snapping off the wingy things on the housing where the bolts clamp to the head. weakest thermostat housing ive ever come across, hardly any pressure on the bolts
when it snapped off.
must be designed to only use proper new gaskets.
Ended up making a metal bracket that sits on the thermostat ledge. works well.

heres an image, best thing is will never need to buy gaskets, i paid $6 just for the one that surrounds the actual thermostat, at that price my tyres should be worth millions.

I doubt it,ll break again.

Hi all,

IMHO and regardless of thermostat design it's the wax pellet element that must be placed towards the heat source in our cooling circuit.

is the wax pellet on the spring side, inside the copper cylinder section.
I kept it in the spring side towards the head position, when testing the old thermostat in boiling water, only placing half of it in the water, dipping spring side in only- opens the valve. dipping the opposite side didnt do a thing.
also when warming up the car hose stayed cold, as it got to correct temp suddenly got hot. im sure this is the correct way.

The wax pellet is in the red copper cylinder section. I don't know if you have the original tstat with the wax pellet on spring side (second pic) or another one like first pic.

i got confused... not sure at which side the spring is located... anyways this is a pic of a genuine daewoo thermostat... the side shown in the pic sits in the thermostat housing... the hidden part sits in the head

yeh the spring is hidden, thanks for confirming, i have the st louis arch section on the thermostat facing the semi ball housing bowl,
and the spring which is covered in your pic facing the head.
by the way ! st louis arch section and the semi ball housing bowl are the correct terminology when refering to these parts.
