Hello members, -have just joined.
Have a nubira- 1.6 litre A16DMS engine.
Finished replacing the water pump + idler pulley and tensioner + the timing belt. (The timing belt did not break- was only replacing a leaky water pump and the car ran fine before repairs.)
Marks on the camshaft pulley and crank were in the correct position, and the mark on the belt tensioner were matched pointer to pointer.
problem is started the car and runs like crap. Its very hard to get it running.
Pulled of the pulley and cover to recheck the marks, they were fine.
I done many cars before and have never had this problem.
checked the teeth on the crank pulley as this is where it gets its timing (i assume). they were fine.
Have checked posts on this site to find out about the cam pulley position, as when i was lining up the marks which on this motor,
intake is at 3 o clock and the exhaust is at 9 o clock. but when actually placing the belt to get these lined up, the ehaust would hold its position at 9 oclock, without resistance,
but the intake had to be turned about 1 tooth using a spanner and had resistance so probably a valve remained slightly open.
Is this normal- but even if this was the problem i dont think it would run this bad, have come across cars before that were out by 1 notch, they ran smooth but lacked power.
have also been told that the engine spark timing is done by turning the water pump which tensions the timing belt and i guess would move the cams a few degrees as compared to the crank.
But the spark timing on this motor is done on the crank. so i couldnt understand that.
would placing more tension on the timing belt adjust the timing, would it be safe for me to try this and start it up.
1 more ? . is it safe to re-use the 17 mm M12 12.9 tensile bolt which holds on the pulley, as it has been torque yeilded when tightening it up.
Here where i live in western australia i can not purchase this bolt and they are obsolete through the daewoo dealer.
I could have ordered in a box of 100 but i dont have 100 nubiras.
I bought the allen head type bolt, but am worried that the smaller contact surface area with the pulley washer would eventually bite or dent into the washer thus loosening tension on the pulley.
Any help would be great thanks john.

Problem was bent valves, through my own stupidity.
And would love to bend the rest of this car with a sledgehammer.
"But i cant, its not my car".

did you make sure the arrow on the tensioner is in the right place??
this pointer tells you if you got enough tension in the timing belt and if you don't then you have to tilt the water pump to get more/less tension till te arrow is in the correct place... since you replaced the water pump then i recon their was a problem with the tension that led to the bent valves issue you mentioned
BTW the flicking cam is normal as heir is a partially open valve in the correct cam position for alignment.

MMamdouh, what do you mean by flicking cam ? is that the little bit of resistance or slightly open cam when lining up the marks.
tensioner was pointer to pointer.

that's exactly what i was describingjohnoo wrote:MMamdouh, what do you mean by flicking cam ? is that the little bit of resistance or slightly open cam when lining up the marks.

cheers MMamdouh.
may have to check and clean the IAC valve, have searched a few posts and seems to be a common prob causing unsteady idle.
But i would guess it would be the same when the aircon is on, but it idles well with A/C on.

I am doing one of these now and I would think the crank bolt would be good to go again with a little lock tite on it as I cant see the value in the torque to yeld bolts on there. plenty of shops these days reuse the head bolts of these types, Long live the Toyota 4Y engines as they are sensational!

I just checked my Toyota this morning and I am happy because this is in good condition. You have a good set of ideas and I think they are very useful. You can also do the right maintenance for your car.
