Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
hi members. hope you can help me.
my dads daewoo 1.5 engine was rebuilt 15000km back. it started to use oil and water and lose power and smoke,as if it has done 200000km.
it had a huge mis at startup but that got fixed when i removed the alarm system(what a job ).
i opened up the engine and sleeves mesured 70.05mm pistons mesure 70mm +- 0.02mm at the skirt and 76.3 +-0.02 at the crown.
the big end bearings are wasted and the cam and rockers are damaged . before i removed the pistons i noticed some big piston slap.
the head and block was previously skimmed a few times, but i dont think the damage is related to a to high CR? or maby a lot of carbon formed of the compresion?
we are thinking of fitting the opel monza Gsi 1.6 8v engine as this is almost the same. i would like to know if anyone can tel me if this engine is plug and play with minor wiring?

Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
i am not sure about the opel engine but if you have access to a nubira 1600 DOHC engine it will be a much "hassle free" job
you will only need to swap the power steering pump and use the front engine mount from your old 1.5 SOHC and make a trigger wire from the ecu to the VGIS solenoid... every thing else is a direct swap

Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
is the nubira 1.6 much better than the lanos 1.6?
Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
Should be the same engine except engine mounts, and accessories

Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
so in reality a lanos 1.6 would go in easier than a nubi 1.6?
Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
its a south african daewoo cielo/nexia/racer. is that engine reliable? so you say everything fits? it has no ps and ac.
Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
nope... it is the very same engine with one difference... the power steering pump and front engine mount swapped places with each otherbenzino wrote:is the nubira 1.6 much better than the lanos 1.6?
the lanos got the PWS pump under the cam gear and the front engine mount is above the A/C compressor
the nubira got the engine mount under the cam gear and the PWS pump is above the A/C compressor
i only suggested the use of a 1.6 DOHC from a nubira as i am not familiar with the local market were the car owner exists so i am not sure if he has access to 1.6 DOHC lanos engines... and since lanoses come standard with 1.5 SOHC just like here then i recon the nubira will be equipped with a 1.6 DOHC (again like here in Egypt) so it is an opportunity to but the bigger & more powerful engine in his car rather than sticking with the old 86HP 1.5 SOHC

1.6 nubira will need engine mount and PWS pump relocation

Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
and the computerbox? remapping needed? chip needed? arnt these engines soft and dont last long?
Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
The 1.6l sohc/dohc? Soft? hell naw. The 1.6 and even the 1.5l are workhorses. As long as the timing service interval is completed, these engine are pretty durable. The 2.x are the pos in comparison. The only problem which both engines share is excessive blow by caused by weak rings. Normally they just end up getting stuck in their bores, and cracking. This is common, but if caught on time can usually be corrected without engine disassembly...
As long as you are using DOHC ecms you should have no problem. The difference lies in the 1.5/1.6l SOHC engines. Those ecms are indeed different.

Re: Daewoo 1.5 engine/swop
Oh keeping in mind there was a ecm recal on post mid 01 engines due to a idle relearn fault. But your car doesnt fall under that category, and swapping to the newer version can be done to older cars anyways (should be done)

ECM = Engine Control Module
if your vehicle is SOHC then you will need to acquire the engine harness as well as the ECM of the DOHC vehicle. Keep in mind the transmission option is also a key detail. the 1.6l manual cars use a different ECM/harness than the auto cars. Although a manual 1.6l will be a turn key engine with a automatic car ECM, just the check engine light will stay illuminated.
You do not need the interior harness as the DOHC ecm will plug right in under the seat, and the DOHC engine harness will plug right in to the firewall plugs. Still some hardwiring my be required. I have never done an engine swap only transmission, and although everything is plug and play, I still had to wire the clutch switch, and deactivate, the shift interlock.
