Timing issue IMHO.

Is it still possible to bust a valve or would that have happened immediately upon the first start up?

If any, busted valve(s) is already done.
But you can dammage valve(s) & seat(s) further by using you car without fixing the timing problem since combustion could occurs while valves are not seated.
I would tow this car to the working place.

check the alignment of your cam gears

you basically got a daewoo engine and the interchange between the engine mount and PWS pump is common....

same happens on the 1.6 lanos and 1.6 nubira... they both got same engine but the engine mount and PWS switched places

There are some differences with the older 1.6l engines and the one found in the Aveo. The Intake manifold, and engine management for one. As far as the 2.0/2.2l there are some differences in the block, and I dont know of any other US vehicles which used these engines except for the Nubria/Leganza/Malibu
