ive been looking through the forum and i notice the EGR problem similar to mine has come up.
I have a 1998 lanos 1.4se and it literally drinks fuel (currently returning 20mpg around town!) and also past 4000 rpm's it misfires badly and will not accelerate. I had the local mobile tuning guy come out to have a look at it and he found no error codes but he did find that there was no vacuum getting to the EGR valve as the sensor thing that is in the path of the vacuum pipe is not letting any air through.
My question is what is the correct name for the sensor? because if i type EGR sensor i get nothing except EGR valves coming up on ebay and the acutal EGR valve is working correctly so it doesnt need replacing.
please help as i really cant afford to be putting fuel in every 2 days and just taking my son to school and back
Hmm can you post a picture of your EGR valve? Im in the states and only 1.6l and 2.0/2.2l made it here. Though I am familiar with the 1.5l and 1.6l s/dohc But the 1.4 I sadly am not.
Regardless, post a picture, because from my understanding all Woo's use a linear egr valve (which is all built in) but due to more lax emission requirements of other countires maybe they used a more traditional vaccum operated erg...

thanks for the reply the egr on the 1349 e-tec motor is vacuum operated but it passes through this sensor (i assume its a sensor because it has a 3 wire plug going to it) before it gets to the egr itself.afaik the 1349 is based on the 1.5l motor but ill take a picture tomorrow morning to show you exactly what im talking about
btw does anyone know what engines from daewoo could be put in the lanos as a replacement??? id love to put the 2.2 from the big woo in there to perk it up
the latter two are commonly referred to by gm systems.
anyways dont mean to butt into someone elses work, but the only way to test the solenoid is with a scan tool or digital multimeter. they normally operate at 5.0v at idle FIXED value, which increases with engine rpms and other factors.
also at idle the egr sees NO vaccum what so ever...

i finally got an answer from gm (vauxhall over here) and they call it a egr solenoid, you are right about the idle thing but when you rev the motor it still has no vacuum going to the egr so ill test the voltage and see what comes up, ive ordered the part anyway for peace of mind so all being well it should be running much better asap
Hopefully that solves, your problem but IMO it will not. No vaccum to egr means its basically disconnected at any engine speeds. This would only cause pinging or predetonation at the most.
You probably have a bad EGR valve in itself. Just because it holds vaccum or what not does not mean its functioning correctly. It could be dirty, or have a stuck or warped pintle.
Anyways, that is just my opinion, hopefully the solenoid will cure it.
