what would cause my gerar to feel hard and stif to get in to gear...

1- could be the ball joint of the stick itself needs lubrication... take off the leather cover over the shift stick and use WD40 to lubricate the mechanism
2- could be a sign for warn pressure plate

Do you get grinding when it's hard to put into gear.... is it only when running or is it fine when the car is shut off ?
Could be many things.... issues with tranny mounts, slight misalignment of linkage, dry/siezed compoents, contaminated gear oil ( or something in the gear oil like a small piece of a seal ), general wear of the gearbox ( bearings )...... lots of things really..... hard to say.

You can check if the engine mounts are damaged by shifting into 2nd gear, and step into the gas, if you see the shiftstick moving widely, it's a sign of a damaged engine mount(s). or, if you have someone to help you on this and being very careful, one must be on the side of the car, with the hood opened looking at the engine, and the other one on the car with the hand brake on, 1st gear on, and then release partially the clutch, and increase the throttle a little... If the engine moves freely, then you know what's happening, again, one or more of the mounts are broken.
