the reason the exhaust silencer looks so different is because its not a metal box, its a nylon of sorts... if anyone wants more info: www.poly-zhaust.com

the turbo build begins...
first of all... here's a picture of the turbo and manifold to show the similarities of the two flanges:
then... i scrapped the idea of aligning the turbo and manifold flanges, cos that would only realy have happened if the radiator wasnt in the way - i was tempted to move it, but it would have had to be moved about 2 inches forward... not the easiest of tasks. so i played round with rotating it a bit, and found this to be the best:
this kinda thing would require an adapter... didnt have time for that though - even though its a slow build - so i welded it, and here it is sitting pretty in the engine bay:
that was with just the 3 points welded and sitting loose on the engine to check clearances etc... i still have to move the radiator! lol - but not completely, just got put it at an angle... will get some pics of when thats done.
and here are some more pics of where the oil return pipe is and how it all sits next to the engine properly bolted in place:
tomorow the sump's coming off so i can drill a hole for the oil return and put in the oil feed adapter aswell. still need to get the oil, so thats first on my to-do list tomorow morning.

that was considered, like a civic rad, cos they're bout half the size, but it would still be partially in front of the turbo and being thicker it wouldnt help much. having it at a slight angle gives enough clearance to have a 90 degree 2" diameter silicon hose coming off it - this problem has only come up cos of the direction the compressor is facing, most other turbochargers face straight up or down, and some have the 90 degree bend cast with it (ie: KKK k03 and k04 chargers used on volkswagens)Big Jeff wrote:wonldn't it be better to get a small but thicker rad

exhaust front pipe is done, oil feed and air filter connected:
ive also managed to get the radiator fan back in, had to "adjust" it to make it fit, by adjust i mean i cut several large un-needed chunks out of it.
fuel pressure regulator is waiting to go in, along with new spark plugs and fresh oil
gota find some money for the boost pipes next...

are you customing the whole exhaust.....
coz that flange look the wrong way round. my exhaust has 2 hole at the top and 1 on the bottom .......
where it looks like you have welded it 1 at the top and 2 on the bottom

yeah, the whole exhaust is a one-off jobby... i dont know why i put the flange the wrong way round, it just seemed right at the time. lolBig Jeff wrote:are you customing the whole exhaust.....

for the rest of the exhaust, ive decided not to put in the mid silencer... so at the end flange of the front pipe, there'll be the cat directly followed by the poly-zhaust backbox. still need to add the end pipe to actually make it a side-exit exhaust, which is basically just a piece with a 90 bend in it to point out.

had it boosting today... then the oil feed pipe decided to shoot off and drain all the oil. £35 worth of fully synthetic down the drain.
fuelling and boost pressure still needs to be set up properly, but at least the hard part is done.

as for the how-to, i pretty much just followed Tim's (ubuyau) write-up for tturbo charging the 1.5, all that realy lacks are pictures i guess. and then there's the thread i started in the aftermarket section about turbo charging the lanos 8v engine, which is a kind of 20 questions about turbos.
on a final note... is this the first turbo 1.3 lanos in the world...? cos everyone seems to be hooked on the 1.5 and 1.6 lanos'

ordered a proper oil feed pipe, with screw fittings etc, hopefully i'll hav that soon next week.
for the short period of time that the engine was running on boost it surprised me. i expected the check engine light to start flashing and telling me evrything's wrong - but no, it didnt.
ive only put 2 check valves in for the map sensor, but seeing as i have a spare map sensor i mite put that in without checkvalves when its running again to see what happens.
oh yeah... the blow off valve... its loud... no wait... ITS STUPIDLY LOUD!!!
