Busted engine component. Please help asap!

Hey Guys,

Tonight While i was in Bedford (about 1hr-1hr 45mins. away) my car broke down... i just smelled burning rubber then i saw my temp light on, and my car temp was like at 12'O'Clock (the redline is roughly at 10:30)

I found what broke... a big hose going into a metal piece right below the bottom left part of the engine, between the Headlight and below/in front of the airbox. what part is this because it looks to be an easy fix, if it's expensive i'm giong to say F*ck it and just go to the 2.0l ... i'm angry lol... not really i'm just looking for an excuse to do the swap. That and the fact the block had that happening for about 5-10 minutes. Now mind you it wasn't the hose that busted, it was the piping. Right on the bend of the piping it busted. i believe it was right near the temp gauge.

Please let me know asap... i'm not at college so my computer use will be often

Was it the metal attached to the radiator or to the engine that broke?

Cliff it was quite dark, so i'm not exactly 100% sure, all i know is it was East-Northeast of my headlight and heading under the airbox. I'm thinking it was either water or coolant the way my engine was steaming.

I don't have my laptop and my sis's pc is junk... i'm going upstairs to my moms (i built) and i'm going to try and find a pic.

I scoured the internet for a while till i remembered that Shaun had a complete piece by piece picture show on c9c.com. I found the part.

The white is where it broke and the red is what pipe. I'm sorry shaun if this offends you (i don't think it will but just in case

)

So that is what broke...

Which leads me to my next questions...

1)what the hell is it?
2) how the hell did it break?
3) why... i could understand the hose busting ... but the metal piece... right before the bend?
4) how hard/costly is it to fix?

seeing it in daylight makes me again believe it is either water or coolant. ... (i'm leaning towards water) so yea... let me know... THanks guys....

From what I gather you have a damaged thermostat housing.

The part you are talking about should be easy to replace....there is just a simple rubber O-Ring and a couple of bolts.

How much it costs depends on if you want to buy it new from a Suzuki dealership or if you want to get it from a scrap yard (much cheaper)

Alternatively you could try and get it off whom ever is looking after Daewoo parts in the USA.... but you might have better luck with the other two choices.

ehm... that wont cost much to fix indeed... BUT you said your temp went red?... ow lord... well pick that part put water in it and check for typical headgasket leaking effect cuase you have a very high probabilty its busted one the engine went red in temp

um, the temp didn't just go red... it was at 12 (directly north) and anyone that has seen the stat knows it only goes to 10:30 (north west).

Towing it's going to be the problem. Plus it looked like between the metal cam cover there might have been some warping, this it out of my area of expertise. Which is filling the windshield washer fluid. Where is the head gasket and How should i check it?

Is there another name for the thermostat housing because there isn't anything like that on car-parts.com

Ok ... the Lanos thermostat housing is a known weak point. They are $19.95 at www.gm-car-parts-com

Because it is the same part in the Aveo, the part should be in stock at any Chevy dealer near you. Make some calls & see who has the best price.

When they ask for the year make, model and part, tell them 2004 Aveo thermostat housing. Then tell them it's really for a Daewoo Lanos, but it's the same part because they have the same engine.

Because the thermostat broke and all the coolant dumped, there is a possibility that the cyllinder head is warped. If you stopped the engine AS SOON as you noticed it, you very well may have not done any damage.

Doing a 2.0 engine swap will cost a LOT more than if you just need the head machined flat, a new thermostat and refilling the coolant.

Because I know this is a weak point in the Lanos engine, I keep a couple of those spare at the house.
The one in my dad's car broke a few months ago, so the extra ones here are for which ever car breaks next! LOL

I am actually going to take one apart, modify it with epoxy and have new halves cast in brass or aluminum.

That way, you can use any temperature thermostat and never worry about it breaking again because it will be bolted or threaded together. I have not yet decided which way I will make the halves stay together.

I will install one of these on my car & one on my dad's car.
If they work as planned, I will make a few extra for other people who may want them.

They will fit the 1.6L engines in the Lanos/Kalos/Aveo/Swift.

I really hope you stopped your engine before it got any heat damage.

i stopped asap... then again i'm not exactly 100% sure when it started to when i stop, i know as soon as i noticed i pulled off and slammed on the brakes so i could quickly kill the engine and investigate the problem. The cam cover looks like theres 1 spot where it doesn't meet. However what else should i be looking for?? I plan on grabbing the part. What size nut do i need, and is there any intricate parts i should be looking for?

You will need 2 pairs of slip joint pliars to remove the squeeze type spring hose clamps and a 10mm socket with an extension on a ratchet handle.

Uless the new thermostat does not come with new gaskets, which I think it does (I cant remember, I have not looked at mine in so long) then you may need a tube of Form A Gasket.

When my dad's thermostat housing broke, he left the car at the Ford dealer's parking lot! LOL ... He came back 2 days later and installed the new one in about 15 minutes, so it's not a difficult installation. Don't forget to take a jug of water to fill up so you can get the car home.

What else should i checked to be busted or in poor condition?

Wow .. LOL ... planning an engine swap and you don't even know where the coolant fill is!! hehe

You fill the water/antifreeze in the reservoir is next to the driver side strut tower and has a yellow screw on top.

Just fill it up and squeeze the big black radiator hoses to help get the air bubbles out.

run the engine for a few minutes so it circulates and then squeeze the hoses again to help get more air out. BE CAREFUL: the radiator hoses can get HOT!
