sticky lifter

Post by jidasas »

Well, I haven't driven the woo in a while and I noticed a lifter that I can hear tapping a little. So, this summer will begin my engine rebuild. I'm going to pull the head while I'm off work for a bit and rebuild it with components I'm having ordered. Then I'm going to rebuild the bottom end with the pistons I've already got and new rods. I'm gonna use the stock crank but have it cryotreated, nitrided and shotpeened.

My only question for now is how much will the stock valves handle? I'm afraid that stiffer valve train components may spell disaster for stock valves. I'm going to be boosting the motor to around 12 psi too... Does anyone know if I should replace with something better than stock for the valves or if stock valves will be ok?

Thanks

Jimmy

no clue about your question mate, but in my car (1.6 DOHC) the tappets, well they caused a sticky situation too. old oil stays in the inside and build up also gets trapped in there, so it basically could never compress, which gave a slight knocking sound. i rebuilt my engine (no turbo) and all the sounds went away.

but since you say a lifter, im guessing its a push rod type engine, so you probably have a 2.0 or 2.2?
all i can say, is good luck on the rebuild, hope you have plentyyyyy of time off work.

Sorry, it's not a lifter...i have the 1.6 dohc.

It's the tappet...but either way I'll be rebuilding this summer.

Anyone have any ideas as to the limits of stock valves in the 1.6?
