Hi Guys,
I am sure I have read this somewhere on here before but I tried to search it without any luck. I have way too much noise coming from my top end, I know some noise is normal but mine sounds worse than most diesel trucks. Instead of spending $2800 on rebuilding mine, I was looking at getting a recon head instead. Does anyone know if any heads from others in the family would be a direct fit?
Cheers
Chris

Re: What heads fit X20SED
all the newer iron block Ecotec engines should fit the X20SED as far as I know.
Basically you need to avoid the C20XE and C20LET.... everything else including the 2.2L engines should be fine.
I'm not sure where your from.... but the easiest choice is probably a 2.0L from an Astra or Vectra..... just be sure it's the iron block engine not the newest Aluminum Ecotec.
As far as your top end noise.... I have to wonder if it's not perhaps an issue with your oil pressure in the cylinder head.
As well..... $2800 is a crazy amount..... you can buy reconditioned heads for $500 to $800 and entire engines for roughly the same amount.

Re: What heads fit X20SED
Thanks mate.
That price was to get my existing head done, I haven't got a price for an exchange one fitted which should be cheaper. I am from Australia, we have plenty of Astra's here so it shouldn't be too hard to find a 2L head somewhere.
Do you think the intake, exhaust manifolds and other misc. parts still bolt straight up too?
When I had my belt and water pump changed a couple of months back, the mechanic checked my oil pump and did an oil pressure test and said there was no problem. I know my oil cap is leaking a little which may be effecting it a bit, but the noise had been there for a lot longer than the leak.
Cheers

Re: What heads fit X20SED
All the naturally aspirated Astras sold in Australia (I'm in Victoria) are 1.8 litres and even though they may physically fit the 2-litre engine, the compression ratio would be impossibly high due to the increased volume of petrol vapour/air you'd be compressing. If you could get hold of an Astra turbo head, I think the version sold here has a 2.2-litre engine, so you'd still need to sort out the compression ratio, but in this case the head would need metal removing. Shouldn't be too hard to get the correct thickness data from a competent reconditioner. The going rate for a second-hand 2-litre head in Melbourne is (or was about a year ago) around $500, but you'd probably want to strip it and get the valves, valve seats and underside machined, at which stage it'd be like brand new.
