Silicon filled engine/tranny mounts

i have got myself a set of engine/tranny mounts and filled them with standard issue silicon to make them stiffer... i don't know if it is my driving or the fact that the mounts are so weak that they break too often, i already found 2 of the 3 on my car were already broken

after the installation i felt way more engine vibrations... during both idle and semi pressed clutch (during parking or so)... this gives the feel that the engine became more "violent" in the engine bay and vibrating too much... it is actually the fact that their is much less damping for those vibrations now

on the drive i felt the care more responsive... probably because the torque is all going to the wheels rather than twisting the engine/tranny... also i have noticed less torque steer

GSiTurbo filled the mounts in the silver GSi with Urethane and it's incredible how much vibration and noise came from this simple upgrade

In the end he ended up drilling holes into the mounts.... but they are still very stiff and transfer too much vibration/noise to the passenger compartment.

I have a friend with completely solid engine mounts in his high output Neon and I actually think he has less vibration than I do.

Many other vehicles respond well to engine mount filling.... but for some reason the Lanos/Astra chassis is very sensitive to changes to the mount.

I was thinking about installing a gas dampener on the rear of the engine to help reduce vibration.

well... i recon i have less vibrations than GSiTurbo as the silicon i used is not that stiff... it is used for gluing car windshields and stuff like that, a friend offered to fill them for me with polyurethane but i refused as i know they would be super stiff and hurt the ride quality... after all my car is not going to be a racing machine or produce substantial amount of power to need such hardcore mod

i have tried this before on dad's car but i filled only the mount at the belts side and it was mainly to help it survive more as i broke this mount too many times... last engine mount problems on that car came from the two tranny mounts and the silicon filled mount was intact.

I think the "front mount" style puts lots of stress on the mounts..... the newer center mount seems to be a better design.

You may want to consider the gas shock idea as well.... it can be placed at the top rear of the engine and it will help balance the movement.

The biggest problem is finding metal on the firewall that is thick enough to absorb the force.

I thought about integrating it into the firewall as part of a strut bar.... that way I could use a fairly thick plate and bolt it to the firewall in four to six places to equalize the stress.

Quite often they sell cheap kits on ebay..... I think it's usually for the Nissan 240SX as I guess this type of upper shock mount helps them handle the power from the SR20DET
