Intercoolers

Im looking for an intercooler for Lanos, like what height/wide would be ok?

then where can i put the intercooler? between the bumper and AC-radiator? (condenser, w/e? lol)

Height and size of the radiator doesnt just depend on the space you have, obviously, on different setups, larger/smaller ones are superior, at low boost levels you dont want a massive one as it'll cause a bit of lag, whereas, with more boost, you'd want a larger one to help chill the air as much as possible on it's way in to prevent detonation, and to get moe power gains. Colder air = more power. But you dont wanna go too big if you're going for a small turbo setup in all honesty. Likewise, you don't wanna go too small.

I was thinking about getting an intercooler first then save up some money and get a small turbo, dont want my engine going "puff!".

Here is what i am looking at:

You may have a hard time squeezing in that wide of an intercooler.... 28" is quite a bit.

You should really consider looking at stock intercoolers for cars like the VW Beetle, Mitsu eclipse..... they aren't that big.... nor do they need to be unless your planning on big power.

Personally... if I were looking for a small turbo to fit in a lanos....and I was on a budget.... I would consider a used intercooler from a stock turbo vehicle.... you might find one as cheap as $15 to $20

i'll try to measure the area where my bumper fits. Then prob look for a maybe smaller one 24" maybe

Ive seen some of them, the intercoolers stock but they are too small and prob would look gay also

ok so i did some measurements and the 28" is the maximum

I need to get one like 14-16" overall length

There are a number of companies selling smaller intercoolers for cars like the Toyota MR2..... but the draw back is that they tend to be very thick ( 4" ) as opposed to the 2.5" you normally see.

I belive the Beetle and Eclipse intercoolers are pretty small..... but like I said.... they are just fine for lower boost levels.

After all.... a manufacuturer is going to put in the cheapest (smallest) intercooler they can get away with while ensuring that they don't have issues with reliability of the engine.

GM sold the C20GET ( 2.0L 8V Turbo ) without an intercooler in their Grand Am and Sunbird...... the turbo only made 7psi and it was just fine.

With a small ( and usually thin ) intercooler from a stock car you should be able to fit it right in front of your radiator.... leaving your bumper area alone.


There are lots of options... I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and how much you want to modify your car.

Why do an intercooler first...? It would not be useful without some sort of forced induction.

thinking about spending not soo much on the intercooler, so your option about getting a smaller intercooler looks very real to me. so here is another question for u:

if i get the intercooler, how do i "hook" it up so it wont fall?

then what turbos do u recommend for me if i get small intercooler?

You can look on ebay at small turbos...such as the tdo4 from mitsubishi or the small turbo's from subaru wrx's or something like a gt28 unless you want high boost levels...which if your on stock internals I would not reccomend.

Personally.... a T25 can be found fairly reasonable.... I'd go with a Garrett if possible.

One thing to consider is looking around the UK for a 1.6L turbo manifold and turbo.... since they have a turbo version of your engine allready available in other parts of the world.

i live in the uk and did not think about the corsa, ias it a gm motor the exhaust manifold should be the same

A new/used turbo and manifold from a vxr/opc corsa would cost you an arm and a leg..
