I need help and deawoo history!

Im doing a presentation in school on daewoo and i need some facts about the company, like when it went to shit and when it was bought by gm and everything really important.

This is an overall view of Daewoo as a company. It has seperate articles for Daewoo Motors, Daewoo Electronics, etc. It goes from the company's entrance into existence and grows all the way to when Daewoo went bankrupt. I know Wikipedia isn't the greatest source, but it should give enough info.

You might want to look at some of the electronics as well as just the cars. I have a Daewoo VCR that was the cheapest you could buy had tons of features and absolutely refuses to die even after a trip down the front porch stairs (cement). My little sister has a 20" Daewoo TV that was real cheap, had tons of features and is so old it doesn't have an RCA jack.
Are you seeing a pattern yet?

I noticed in the Wiki article about it they said Daewoo means "Great House"... But I've read things that say the direct translation means "Great Universe".

I wonder which would be true?

It kinda literally translates to "great expanse" or "great space" so it is most commonly written as "great universe".

At least thats what my Korean dealer told me 8 years ago.

from what i heard somewhere the lanos had an italian designer, so italian wouldnt suprise me

Well... Here is a history of the Lanos... but also you'll find a link to Giorgetto Giugiaro, the guy who designed the Lanos. One odd thing I noticed is that in Giorgetto Giugiaro's history, it doesn't list the Lanos along with all the other cars. I think it's an accidental admission though.

He looks like a cool cat, if you ask me...

Giorgetto Giugiaro (August 7, 1938) is an Italian car designer. He initiated the "folded paper" era of the 1970s where the cars were designed with straight lines and sharp edges. As well as a number of supercars, he is responsible for the design of some of the most popular everyday vehicles driven today.

It would be cool to meet him, I think. He's 67... I bet he has some interesting stories.

That wikipedia article sucked ass....I should re-write it to correct a number of glaring errors.

Here.. this is a better one..... only a few mistakes in this one

In one part of the article it states "Helped by the establishment of technical and development centres in the UK and Germany, Daewoo replaced these vehicles with its first totally home-grown cars in 1996 and 1997, Lanos, Nubira and Leganza."

But the writer of the article didn't realize that the Lanos is reworked Astra MKII and the Nubira/Leganza used mostly GM parts (engine,tranny, brakes, electrical system.... the list goes on and on )

So..... Daewoo never made anything by themselves.... they have allways been a partner with GM..... dating all the way back to the early seventies.
