Post by AcingTeam »

Hey guys, what is the difference between AWD, 4x4, and 4WD... I always used to think these were all the same...

If I remember correctly ... 4X4 is the same as 4WD, but AWD (all wheel drive) is the computer controlled system that monitors each wheel and increases or reduces power to the wheel that needs it most depending on the road surface and driving style.

If this is not correct, then someone please fill me in.

:)

adding to what OZ said i think 4x4 is an option on off road cars where you can switch from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive to get extra traction on slippy roads or if you are stuck in mud or sand like Jeep cars and all.

the AWD on the other hand is kinda "on all the time" so you can't switch to 2 wheel drive if you wanted to do so just like the Toyota Celeca, Subaru Impreza and Lancia Delta and other cars.
