Back to the moon

Post by Brian5475E »

I just watched NASA plans for going back to the moon. I can't believe after 35 years they can't come up with a new design for a ship that goes to the moon. All that money and nothing new. another throw away spaceship! Way even go back if your not going to desgn something different so maybe we can go farther someday

It isn't like they need to go back, it is just a large dust sphere in space, I doubt any insane scientific discovery can be made by going back. I think NASA just wants to prove that they can still have sucess after Colombia's crash. Otherwise, I think they'd focus on Mars.

As for the ship, there really isn't anything that can land on the Moon and still fly back to earth other than a disposible craft.

I think it is just a waste of money...

The moon is the platform for going to Mars. they want to build a launching station on the moon so they don't have to burn all that fuel to take of from earth

Thats make since. I would think that having a platform there would serve lots of purposes over time too

well... if they can't launch a ship from the moon to go back to earth, how would it launch off the moon and head to Mars??

This ain't your daddy's Apolla capsule.

This is an innovative adaptation of something that is known to work. It is going to be safer, bigger, and better. They will be using liquid methane to power the capsule and lunar lander. The capsule will land on dry land using parachutes and airbags to soften the landing. It is big. We could send six people up and back or a standard four person crew and equipment to ANYWHERE on the moon. The first missions only allowed us to land on or near the equator. Oh yeah, everyone gets to land, no one is stuck orbiting the moon. More feet on the ground means more stuff getting done.

It will dock with the space station to trade off crew and supplies.

Of course the big deal will be an outpost on the Moon. There we will learn about living away from the Earth on an extended basis, something that will be very much needed for an even longer trek to Mars and back.

Why launch from the moon rather than Earth? Less fuel and resources needed, in the long run. Lower environmental impact is a big plus as well. The initial investment hurts like hell but will have a tremedous payout in the future.

What about robots? They are going too and will preceed us by a number of years.

This is some exciting stuff. :)

When they land, they can excivate and then replenish the Earth's dwindling cheese supply upon returning!
