Real Pronunciation of Daewoo.

Post by BosnianLanos »

How's this for a half -assed thread? Own the car for six years and still don't know the real pronunciation.

I've heard conflicting reports:

Dae-oo (without the "W")
Dae-oh (no "W", just flat "O" sound)
Dae-Woo (Like "Whoo-Hoo, and it rhymes with nearly everything)

Most people refer to it as the last one, myself included, but some people who really know the name swear its Dae-oo.

I feel like such a cretin for posting this, I hope I don't lose any respect.

Damir (pronounced Dumb-ear LoL)

well actually its pronounced like that with a korean accent. if you've ever heard an asian person with a thick accent speak you'll know what i'm talking about. with a korean accent the "W" is like a whisper. don't know if ya'll know what i'm talking about on that but i'm half korean so i live with a mom that says it that way all the time.

It is pronounced DAY-WOO, at least it is in commercials I have seen before.

Edit: At least that is by non-Korean announcers. I suspect that the "W" sound in Korean is just like the deSU sound in Japanese. Its barely enunciated but native speakers just hear it anyway because of familiarity.

My uncle in England who is an automotive engineer said he has always heard it pronounced Day-oo.

Edited to say: glad that I could brighten the day with a laugh :D
