Pulling a trailer with an Aveo

I was thiniking about buying one of those really small camping trailers. It weighes 1500lbs. do you thin the Aveo is capable of towing this. I may have to put the stock springs back in the back when I want to tow. They make a class 1 hidden hitch for the Aveo and it has a max weight of 2000lbs. I used to junk with my 85 escort had a trailer on the back, it was able to pull alot of weight.

Sorry I was reading the max weight on the trailer axle. the trailer weighes 800 lbs

800lbs you'll be more than fine. Hell you've probably had that much weight in ppl in your car

AVEO pulling a trailer ???

Well.... you are pulling about 40% more weight but the 1.6L is a pretty strong engine.

I remember one time when I worked for a GM dealership a lady came in with her Chevrolet Sprint ( 3 cylinder 1.0Liter ) and was complaining that the clutch was slipping and she wanted it replaced on warranty.

The car was about a year old and they were amazed to see that it had allready been driven close to 50,000 km.

Next they noticed a hitch on the back of the car and thought they had better investigate further

They asked why she had so many kilometers on the car and why she had a hitch on the vehicle.

She proceded to tell them that she travels back and fourth between Alberta and Ontario ( 3500km / 2200 miles ) hauling her horse and trailer for the purpose of competitive "show jumping"

The service manager stood there for atleast a minute.... speachless and shaking his head..... we all laughed.

The lady got really upset and started in on the service manager.

He cut in on her rant and said that "this car was not meant to tow anything" and "how you managed to pull a horse and trailer is beyond me but we can't cover this clutch under warranty"

She was confused about why she couldn't tow a horse and trailer ( guessing 4000lbs or more) with a 3cyl 1.0L economy car.

After some explainations she told the service manager about how she used to tow the horse & trailer with a ford explorer and she wanted to replace it with something that got really good gas mileage.

Needless to say.... everyone was so completely amazed that this women managed to get all the way down to Ontario and back not once.... not twice but three times!!!!! before she damaged the clutch to the point where it was slipping.

None of us could belive what was coming out of this ladies mouth.... but that little car managed to keep on trucking even after the clutch replacement.

So..... anyways.... back to my point..... you had better check with GM to find out if hauling a trailer will completely void your warranty.

If your car was rated for 1000lbs and you put a hitch for 2000lbs on it there would be no way for you to prove to GM that you didn't surpass the rated towing capacity.... and any repairs would yours to pay.

It sounds like your like me and don't care about warranty.... so in that case I'd say have fun and pull your trailer.

Just remember that when you calculate load ratings such as GVWR you must include the stuff your packing in the trunk as well as all the people in the vehicle.

Lots of times cars will pull stuff without a problem.... but then you get four big guys and a cooler full of beer in the trunk and wham you snap a piece of the rear suspension going over a pothole.

Since were somewhat on the subject is there any way to get a hitch on the forenza? It would be nice to have a little trailer for track wheels/tires.. and some tools

I've had one installed on mine. I had to have a shop "custom weld" one for it as nobody wants to make a kit for these cars. Pretty cheap for me: 130$CAN +20$CAN for the wiring harness.

Officially, I've bought mine for a bike rack... but I might someday use it to tow a small trailer for short runs to the dump or nearest lumber yard.
