See that is thing someone recommended to me saying his buddy got some rims recently(i believe) for a good deal. Guess I could give them a ring.

Are his wheels the multi-part bolt together type where you can just replace the rims?

I always thought that a rim is a wheel without the tire. Or a wheel is a tire+rim. But OZ did confuse me on the other thread, so I'm not sure now...

Ok ... here we go:

Wheel education

The wheel, is the complete metal part that bolts to the car and the tire fits on.

The rim is the outter part, with the lip edges, where the tire actually fits onto it.

On a cast 1 piece wheel, the rim is built in and can not be removed.
On a multi piece weel that bolts together, the rim can be unbolted and removed from the wheel, such as for replacement after damage.

The reason wheels are called rims is because when cars first started in the 1800's, they had wooden spoke wheels with metal rims around the outside. Because of the bad roads were full of holes, the rim of the wheels were constantly damaged by the road surface. When the rim was damaged, it was replaced with a new one so the tire would stay on it.
People were constantly changing the rims on their cars, and over the many years of having cars, the term rims has been used and has been used as an alternative, yet incorrect, term for wheels.

When you change your rims, you are only changing the outter lip part of the wheel and not the whole wheel as you would with a multi part, bolt together wheel.

When you change the wheel, you are changing the whole metal part.

Which is a waste of money really. Most of the time its cheaper to buy a 1peice wheel and replace it with a full new one when its damged them buy a 2-3peice and replace part of it when its damged b/c they cost so much more... plus usuallly the whoel wheel is screwed

we use them because they are WAY lighter than a forged, milled, or cast wheel. they are a hassle and more expensive though. anyone with the big brake kit on a 2.0L lanos would love them....

in the long run though, they aren't worth it except truely high performance applications (full time racing, off-road, etc)

Have anybody here have heard anything good about these guys. The friend bought WHEELS from these guys and got a good deal with them.
