Cigarette lighter not working at all :( (2000 lanos)

Post by CIA356 »

I just bought myself a satelite radio system and plugged it in and realized that my cigarette lighter socket has no power at all. I checked all my fuses and they are all good, I took out a voltmeter and tested it and I can't get any power reading at all. Any ideas?

Get up behind the cig lighter (counsel) and find the 2 wires that go to it. They clip on the back of the housing.
One is hot and one is ground. Power with the ignition key on only. If you have battery power at the wires prior to the lighter and not in the socket ? It probably not grounding.
If you can't get power off the wires to the socket ? go back and check your fuses again. May have some crud buildup on the blades or the blade inputs. If it does turn out to be the cig lighter socket itself ? You can buy a new socket or clean the old one up.

I just installed XM satalite radio in my woo. I got a aux lighter unit form a local auto-parts store.
A heavy duty fused one. Installed it on the lower counsel, passenger compartment side.
Spliced and soldered the wires into the power and ground wires of the orig. lighter.
This way ? no mess of wires crossing over to the orig cig lighter socket.
Satalite radio rules huh ?

well I eventually took it to a friend whos a mechanic and apparently the wiring was a mess but he eventually got it working again. Ya I'm loving my satelite radio I am using Sirius Satelite Radio now. It took me forever to wire it all because I wired the antenna and power cable behind all the panels and dash so now it looks really nice and clean. THanks for the help
