Finished interior sound deadening today! *Pics*

Post by TheGreatAndPowerfulOz »

I finally finished the sound deadening in my car today! :)
With that getting finished, after almost 3 years, my car finally has carpet in it again! It doesn't feel like my car. :?

I used the foam under-carpet padding from my parts car Lanos so my car now has twice the amount of foam on the floors.
Also, I used a lot of carpet padding and a can of 3M Super 7 (or is it 77?) spray adhesive which REALLY sticks to everything (even my hands! LOL).
Everywhere in the car that I could fit, I used 2 or 3 layers of foam. Under the foam is rubberized tarboard sound deadener on any flat metal panels to stop vibration.

The car is so quiet inside it is almost like wearing ear plugs. It really makes the stereo sound great!

The pic where you can see my hand is to show both layers of floor foam.

Here are pics from today:

I used several cans of expanding foam to fill all the hollow parts of the body and also pillow stuffing in the rear quarter panels and inside the rear hatch door.

I'm really happy with how it all turned out.

Yes, that is carpet foam that I used with spray adhesive.
It is inexpensive and not the best sound deadener available, but it works very well for a cheap price. :)

Also, since I didn't want to spend a lot of money, instead of name brand tar-based sound deadening material that is sold as sound deadener, I used tar saturated felt roll roofing sealer, which is very similar and does an excellent job and can be purchased at a local home improvement store. The one I chose was Owens Corning Weatherlock G

First you cut it to shape. Then to make it stick, you peel off the plastic backing, use a blowtorch to melt the tar surface on the back until it is bubbley, then stick it to the surface you want to stop vibrations. Use gloves and old pliars; it gets very hot and sticks to everything. Your car will have a tar smell for a few weeks after, but it does go away. :)

Also, filling all the body hollows with expanding foam made a very noticable imporvement, too.

Does it add rigidity to the chassis? How much does it weight?

I have no idea and I have no idea. :D

I didn't weigh any of it before putting it in.

I hope the tar smell fully fades for you. Seems like that would be one powerful stink.

I installed the tar stuff more than 2 years ago and all the smell was completely gone in about 3 weeks.

I can't believe it took me so long to get around to finishing.

I used 3 layers of this stuff.
A propane blow-torch was needed to melt the tar so it would stick to the metal of the door frame and also to stick layers of it to itself.
Gloves and pliars were needed so I did not burn myself or get melted hot tar on my hands.

so does that mean no one on the outside can hear the sound system of your car?

That is the whole point. :)

Two reasons that is good:
1) If no one can hear what is inside the car from outside the car, then they have less reason to break in and steal the stereo equipment.
2) If the sound is being kept inside the car, there is less mechanical loss (vibrating body panels) and the music is louder and clearer for you to enjoy.

I really do not like bothering other people with my music, and I don't like being bothered by other people's music.
Sitting at a stop light and feeling the bass from 3 cars away is very annoying, even though my car could do that to other people's cars if I opened my windows.
