Hello everyone...I am in desperate need for assistance...Before I get started, let me say I am an assh**le!!!!
why? Because for the umpteenth time, I left my lights running at work today...I've gotten jumps before and the car started no problem..So today, just got off from work, jump in the leggy, and suprise! No battery power...So I flag over a coworker, ask for her a jump..she hands me some cables and we procede...got them on for about 20 secs when I see smoke coming out of the alternator..YIKES!!! turn off the car, I have her turn off her car..then I notice theres smoke coming off the rubber clamps on the cables(both her and mine) So since Im in the paking lot of the company, they got a security guard who comes around and gives me a jump from a portable set the company carries..These look official, good sturdy vulcanized rubber...my car clicks a couple of times, but it turns on no prob...let it sit for about 2 mins and Im good..so I'm off...pull into a restaurant to get something to eat..come back out..the car wont start!! @#%^**..The keys are in the ignition, but all Im getting is a clicking noise.. (I should note here that I had the fuse box open as as the keys were in the ignition, I got a continous clicking nose directly from one of the big grey fuses..once I removed the keys however, the noise ceased.) I ask a restaurant patron for a jump, and again the car comes on no problem (I should also note here, this time the radio came on, with the correct time on the dash because the car had power, it just wouldn't turn on all the way..I drive home, I am noticing the cruise light is on(though I never hit the button) press the cruise button and it turns off..yet 5 secs later it comes back on...I also see the light for the air bag..but it comes off and on..I pull into my apartment and just as I am about to turn off the car, I hit the brakes, and the car noticeably loses light on the radio, as well as light display flickers, now as I was braking driving home the car was losing power... I turn off the car, try to turn it on, and again the car won't start!! So my questions are
1.)Is my alternator shot? Considering it was smoking before, but no smoking continued as I drove?
2.)Could my starter need to be replaced?
3.)Do I need a new battery?
4/) Because of the clicking noise in the fuse box, is that why the cruise and air bag signs were turning on?
5.)Probably a dumb question but does my battery lose performance power everytime the car dies?
Please help!! Any help and feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

ok the gray thing is a relay
and your altenator is toast
i have a 91 honda crx that i let my g/f drive and when i first got it.. i parked it for a few weeks and went to go start it one day and the battery was dead.. so i jump it and start driving it for about 6 months.. first month it had no problem starting and after a few months it started to feel like it wouldnt start half as good after setting for a night.. about month 5 you couldnt leave it for the night with out it dieing so i got a new batterie.. well with in a few days that battery was dead.. so i got a charger and put it on it... soon after my g/f needed the car so i let her have it. she was heading to school one day and the car just died out of the blue, a cop calls me up and tells me my car is illigaly packed on the side of the road and i need to move it and pay my fine... so i called my g/f and she told me that the car died while she was driving and she pulled over and walked the rest of the way to school (1/4 mile) and that the cop helped her push it to the side of the road.. still gave her a tickit (stupid !@#%) i had figured the altenator was dead.. after having to jump the car about 40 times and i knew it wasnt the batterey. so i took the altenator out and ran it to the parts store.. they hooked it up to the testy thingy and it was reading just enough to power the car but not enough to charge the battery. kinda funny.. as soon as i get the new one in the car feels like a new car again
the way cars should be made is with a "jump start mode" that disconnectos the link between the altenator so that you dont frie it when you get jumped
the reason why my battery kept dieing on me is that the car had a small power draw and if you have one you can use a multi meter to find it

This will be the third alternator
Thank you..I know that I have to get a new alternator now...
So my question is now..what do I do? When I lived in jersey, the same thing happ too...the alternator was changed out, but obviously it didn't work..Do i have a computer problem? It's my own dumb a** fault for not turning my car off, but this will be the third alternator put in

A battery will degrade every time it completely dies (dropping below 10.6V). Unless.....Its a deep cycle battery. Get a yellow top Optima. You can kill them several times with no damage. Whats funny though is I used to run my battery down alot before I bought it (listening to my system without the car on..yeah I know its stupid) but ever since I got my yellow top deep cycle I haven't run it dead.
