Another amp problem

Post by kinkyllama »

I have an 520watt max spl amp running my front componets. Suddenly (I havnt touched it in a long long time) it stopped working. The protection light blinks once when you turn on the h/u then no light appears. I checked all the wires leading to the amp and behind the h/u and they all seam very good. Could my speakers be out, the amp or what?

I tried hooking up my other amp in its place.. but it didnt work or light up at all saying it was in protection mode or anything. Though the amp could be bad.. it worked a month ago and has been in the garage since.

What do you guys think?

check all your wiring, including speakers because there may be a short in a speaker to trigger the protection light or the amps ground may not be a good connection or something. Just try the simple things before jumping to conclusions

check the inline fuse goint to your amp, i had a prob with mu old amp cuttimg out ( the alpine) and it tirens out that i was pulling too much current throught the 100 amp MAXI fuse and it was melting the plastic casing of the fuse, so i replaced it with a 150 amp ANL fuse, no more problems with that amp

I have checked all the wiring, except to the speakers. I didnt know that would cause the amp to go into protection mode.. I'll check that later.

The ground is perfect.. and even tried another just incase.

I also checked the fuse.

See - that's what you get for trying to put a stereo system in a Daewoo. :D

Seriously, you need to trace each pair of wires that run from the amp to the speakers.
It sounds as though either a wire is touching ground or the + and - are touching somewhere.
There is also the possibility that a speaker may have died and it is putting the amp into protection.

I took the speakers wires off the amp and tried to turn it back on and it still went into protection.. so its not the speakers. I also took the ground off and instead of the red (protection) light coming on for a second it stays on. Just some more info.. im going to pull out all of the power wire and check it, though i've checked 90% of it.

It wouldnt go into protection mode cuz of something with the remote wire or RCAs would it? I already checked them but if its a possiblity I could pull out all of it and check.

Edit: I checked every inch of wire going to the amp and all the wires related to the h/u. Dunno what it is.. Only thing I think is left is the amp is busted.

Finally got it. I get the strangest audio issues. Turns out the power wire was just... old. It was over a year old.. we checked the whole wire and even replaced the fuse... it looked 99% perfect. But was only giving three volts, replaced it and everything works now!

I had another problem a few months ago where a speaker wire just didnt work for some odd reason.
