lanos speedo

Post by alan »

hi,
the speedometer on the 1999 1.6 d.o.c. lanos we have bought is about 4 mph slow,
any ideas on what could be wrong? the car has done 59.000 miles.
i need to get this reading pretty acurate, as we have more speed camera's here than you you can shake a big stick at.
i was thinking of taking the needle of and putting it back on 4-5mph ahead, unless some of you clever chaps on here have another solution.
thanks,
regards, alan :)

first off what tire size are you running?? if you got anything other than 185/60/14 you might have problems with how accurate your speedo is but not related to the speedo itself.

your idea is good but it is not that easy, you got to remove the needle stopper - the little thing that stops the needle from going lower than 0MPH - and let the needle fall freely.

you then have to mark where the needle stopped then remove it and put it back a bit retarded with a distance equals to a 4MPH on the scale then put every thing back on.

you got to check the tire size before messing with the speedo.

thanks for the feedback,
the tyres are 185/60 r14.
"MMamdouh" are you sure about retarding the the needle, wont that make it slower still? or have i missed the point?
is there a sensor or electrical connector somewhere on the engine/gearbox, that may be dirty? i dont really fancy messing around with the clock unless really nessarary.
sorry to keep asking all these questions, but apart from this web site, little or no information is available for this model for the d.i.y owner as you know.

OH my bad... i thought the speedo was +4MPH

anyways you know now what to do... advance the needle to compancate for that difference.

as for the speed sensor: yes their is one on top of the tranny case but if that have problems it won't make +or- 4MPH, it will either give no reading - associated with a CEL - or the needle will vibrate as you drive or it will occasionally drop to 0MPH and get back to the correct reading frequently.

i had a similar issue with the fuel gauge needle and i sorted out that way... really easy task if you do it carefully especially the marking for the origonal position of the needle when it drops freely.

Once that happend to me, freaked me out. It happend like 3 months ago and never had that happen to me since or before then. I guess I shouldn't worry about it then. But if the problem comes back again, it is the dirty speedo sencer, correct?

How did you realize that you had a bad speedo? Was it one of the electronic signs that tell you how fast you are going? Or did you drive even with someone else?

It could just be a faulty/dirty speed sensor, which is a fairly simple fix.

i realised we had a bad speedo when my wife bought the car a week ago, i drove her to pick it up, and she followed me home in the lanos, i noticed that she was lagging behind a lot.
when we got back i asked what was up? and she said i was doing about 35mph in the 30 zones, and about 45mph in the 40 zones. all have speed camera's and ididnt get flashed. so thats about the story up to now, but i am going to double check it again tomorrow before i take the clocks out.

alan :)

well, my car is also a 1.6 twin cam, and its covered 56,000 miles.

i am riding on 17in wheels, with a 205,40,17 tyre. and the speedo is near perfect. i have a ROAD ANGEL 2, and tested it, at 70mph it reads 69mph on the ROAD ANGEL, 80mph reads 78mph. so its only slightly out. havent tested it at higher speeds, but the car did the clock when i first bought it (2nd hand) but i think the speedo was out.

thats my input. hope it helps.

yeah... in most cases this will be the problem.

if you keep the overall circumfrence (spelling??) of the rim/tire as the stock then you are OK... if you have 175/70/13 and switched to 185/60/14 or 195/50/15 then your speedo will still be very much accurate. this also applies to 205/40/16 and 215/35/17 tires.

well, mine are 205/40/17 and as i said, the speedo is perfect. i couldnt belive it. i have yet to top the car out on the big wheels, but i will try this week, i bet the speed is less than when it was on the smaller standard 14s.

if you still got the old 14" rims and 185/60/14 could you please tell me how much they weight?

i am consedering getting some OEM metal 14" rims to replace my 13" rims and 175/70/13 tires but i want to know if the 14" setup is heavier... if it turns out to be heavier than the 13" setup i will drop the project.
