I just finished installing KYB gas shock absorbers on the rear of my Lanos.
This took a lot longer that I thought it would because the top nut was rusted on each one.
I fought the first one off with a small pipe wrench (holding the top of the bolt) while (finally) turning the nut with an open end.
Took over an hour !
Even the lower mounting bolts were rusted in place. Had to put an extension/cheater on my wrench and was praying the bolt would not break !
I had sprayed "P.B. Blaster" (product name for the penetrating oil I bought at AutoZone) on all the bolts/nuts about an hour prior to starting the project. When I finished the first shock it was getting dark outside.
So, I sprayed some more "Blaster" on the remaining shock. And left it overnight.
What a difference a night makes ! The next day I was able to remove that old shock in about 5 minutes. Both the upper nut and lower mounting bolt turned freely ! WOOOOOO-WHOOOOO!!!!
Three cheers for "P.B. Blaster" !!!
WD-4O ? whats that ?
P.S. These shocks may outlive my car but if I ever do replace them ? I won't need any penetrating oil or 'cheater'.
I used 'anti-seize" on all threads.

i just did my shocks, struts, adn springs this past weekend. if you used a impact gun you could have had the rusted ones off in like 2 min. mine were rusted to crap, and after a lil bit of a fight they let go. what kyb's did yo get. i had the gas adjust and they were crap. the oem gabriel ultra are stiffer than the gas adjust. i want the kyb gr2 rear shocks too go withe the gr2 struts up front.
I know and was going to impact it the next day but tried turning the nut first.daewoomofo wrote:i just did my shocks, struts, adn springs this past weekend. if you used a impact gun you could have had the rusted ones off in like 2 min. mine were rusted to crap, and after a lil bit of a fight they let go. what kyb's did yo get. i had the gas adjust and they were crap. the oem gabriel ultra are stiffer than the gas adjust. i want the kyb gr2 rear shocks too go withe the gr2 struts up front.
So, the first one was the big problem. I considered the impact while I was fighting that too. What can i say ? I'm stubborn and kept struggling with it. 1 "DUH" for me.
I got the GR-2's (rear) at AutoZone (online shopping) cheaper than the store. Free shipping and right about $60.00 for the pair.
Two day service.
I took it for a ride today and noticed a huge difference on bumps and mountain curves.
Next will be the front. How much did that cost you ?
