I was out driving on Saturday, stopped at red light, going to make a right turn.Light goes green,I go to pull away ...CRUNCH.
It felt like the damn engine fell out,but it was still idling as normal.I put it in park and got out to look. Passenger side wheel was sticking out, with the fender resting on the tyre.
The wheel had detached from the tie rod bit (nut was missing!) and the axle CV boot had come apart.
Luckily I was doing about 1mph, if that, when it happened, just as i was about to make the right turn. If I had been going at any speed,or on the freeway, the wheel would have come right out and the body/engine etc would have crashed to the ground, but as it happened,I was going slow enough for it to come to a rest on the wheel itself. This saved me a lot of money ! Can you imagine this happening at 60mph ??
As it turned out,it only cost me about 40 bucks for the CV boot rebuild kits, and did both sides at the same time,as they were both torn anyway. Cheap fix for what could have been a lot worse.
Here's a pic i took with my phone while waiting for the tow truck.
My wheel fell off the other day !!!

Same damn thing happened to be a few months ago. I was doing about 12mph and came to a complete dead stop. If I was on the freeway I wouldnt have standed a chance, I had my track tires on and as low as my car is it would have either stuck right in the fender or gotten under the car and who knows from there.

The nut came off ????
I am wondering, what caused that nut to come off ?
Don't they have a safety clip of some sort on them ?
On my Lanos, they looked like they are "rust-welded" on.
Good to hear you and your car are ok though.
