JohnnyC's Low Budget Spoiler Project (COMPLETED)

Post by JohnnyC »

I cruised out to a local 'pull it yourself' junkyard and wandered around. After looking at ALL of the cars in the lot, I picked one out and removed it. Originally on a Pontiac Grand Prix. This is just the beginning of the process. Here is a few pics of it just sitting on the back of my woo.

I'll post more pics as progress develops. So far the total cost is $20. :)

Bargain of the century. Appears to be the right fit proportionally with the car - get it sprayed silver and mount it already

Good work!

Aww.... I was waiting to see cardboard and duct tape!

That looks like it will fit well. Excellent price, too!

Well heheh the price is around the same... Some painting masking tape I bought cost me about 1/5 the cost of the spoiler! heheh Add the paint in and I suspect I'm looking at around $50 painted/installed.

It's currently hanging out in the back garage with it's first coat of primer. A few imperfections, but not many :) I wanted to pick up the paint for it today, but unfortunately, the shop I like to go to for paint was closed today. So... I figure it'll be hanging there until Monday. All I had to do to it so far was fix up a couple trouble spots and start spraying on some primer. :)

Can't wait to see how it will look once it's firmly mounted on the trunk. It does have a light box that fits between the spoiler and the trunk lid, but I have no plans of using it. Or at least not yet.

Also been thinking about what I want to use to cut through the inside of the trunk lid so I can make room to get the nut in it. I think I have that worked out. First I'm going to do my VERY BEST to get it as centered as possible (symmetry is key). Then I'll mark off my holes and drill down through the top of the lid. Then I'll have to open up the inside hole somehow (the part I haven't decided how I'll do yet).

Any suggestions or opinions about how far back on the trunk it should sit?

for me i like to have the spoiler some 1/2 inch further to the back than the trunk... makes it look cool.

i pesonally doesn't like spoilers that you have to rill to fit them... the one i got is held using U clamps that holds it to the trun't lip... very clean and easy install and you can remove it any time you want.

Picked up the paint today. I might get to painting it tonight or possibly tomorrow. Total cost at this point is $72 (spent about $50 in paint and clear today).

hehe I was looking at different kinds of paint. Found a special chrome paint that costs about $1000 a gallon haha. Awesome looking, and not something I would try at home, but MAN that would look awesome. :)

Well... it's curing... a little slowly though since it's kinda humid out.

Get to place and mount it soon!

Well... it's just about ready to mount. I'll either be mounting it tonight or tomorrow morning (probably tonight since I can't seem to stop myself from going out to work on my woo. Anyway... paint looks pretty decent, again, not perfect, but I didn't expect perfect when spraying with a can.

In these pics it's just resting on the trunk, no holes drilled or anything yet.
