oily/greasy stuff; wheres it coming from?

Post by kinkyllama »

Well im rotating my wheels. My front left wheel has a CRAP load of oily/greasy stuff. It appears its only getting inside the wheel then the inside part of the wheel is flipping it onto the fenders... the only other place it is is the brakes and axle area. I just had my calipers rebuilt btw.

Wheres it coming from and what is it?

Thanks,
Danny

Our CV joints have a low viscosity brown colored lubricant inside of them (looks like thich chocolate milk for lack of a better term). I learned this the hard way when I pulled a CV joint from a Nubira at a junk yard. This would only come out if you had major damage to the drive shaft. Check to see if your boots are still intact and not torn or loose and that there is no damage to the drive shafts where they enter the engine.

Maybe you just ran over something that sprayed into your wheel well.

yep I noticed the same thing on mine. Check the boot on your CV joint, I'd be willing to bet it's busted.

Wow, why didn't I think of that!

Lol, j/k

I just got confused because the lubricant I saw was brown, not black. It may have changed by now.

It is brown but it turns black when it splatters everywhere from the dirt and brake dust.
I just replaced the entire axle and that seemed to do the trick.

Well i finally got the wheel off. It appears to be grease and not brake fluid. Although i wouldnt know how much grease could be building up in there... and my brake was slowly getting low, although it appears to have stopped. Can brake fluid get enough dirt built up in it (outside of the brake lines) that it appears and acts like grease?

no... its to fluid to make "build ups"... that is more like grease or so, maybe from wheel bearing or a drive shaft.

one thing you can do to make sure this is not braked fluid... try to pour some water (no pressure) on it and see how easy it goes off... if the water cleans it easly (in comparasion that this is supposed to be oil; or greas that require throught claning effort) then it is brakes fluid.

if water doesn't do anything to clean it then it is either oil or grease.

Good idea!

It came off much easyier than grease would have.
