Lanos- Suspension/Steering Problem

Post by daewooluvr »

hey guys,
well this morning on the way to work my car slid and hit a curb hard on the passenger side. No visible damage however my steering is all messed up and I believe there is a dead spot in my steering. Right now it's hard to tell how bad it is due to all the snow and ice.

Can anyone venture an estimated guess as to what was affected?

Thanks,

As a side note, the impact somehow managed to get the heater fan to work again ...

check the steering bars (connecting the strut to the steering rack)... you probably bent the one at the side of the impact

Yep that's what is was, a tie rod. It's bent pretty badly.

Looks like just a bolt in the rack and pinion and a bolt on the tie rod end to replace it, is that correct? Any tips?

i um.. "hopped" a curb once in my woo and the passenger tie rod got bent too. since im cheap, i pulled it off, one bolt on the rack and the one bolt on the end, under neath, (that one's a bit tricky as it like to spin, so i used vise grips to try and squeeze it)
then i stuck it in a vise, and hammer the sh!t out of it until it looked straight, then spray painted it. looked at my manual for the torque specs and threw it on.
though from that "crash" my steering has been straight but the wheel is super crooked, and i have yet to get it aligned :/

though best thought would to buy a new one. good job on the fan ;)

you got that right

removing the ball joint from the strut assembly can be a pain in the ass... try to undo the bar from the rack/pinion side first then spin the bar to undo it from the other side with the ball joint in place

you will need to check the car's alignment after the replacement.

Yep that's what I ended up doing. I took of a pic of the bent tie rod.
