rear strut bar mounts

ok im planing on making my rear strut bar i have a peice of 1x1 inch solid aluminum bar that im gonna make the bar from and a piece of 3/8 inch steel plate to fab the brackets from. my question is should i make brackets that mount to the shock

or the shock tower

ive heard about people haveing spin out problems with ones mounted on the shock its self, but ive also never seen one made to go on the tower its self. i know there arent alot of rsb's for the lanos out there so theres not alot of info on whats gonna be the best, but if any of the suspension experts have any advice it would be greatly appreciated. thank you

From what I've understood, mounting directly to the shock is the best place. They are only mounted to the frame/tower if it not possible too difficult to mount to the shock.

thanks for the info. i actuall decided to make a prototype of my rsb today since i had a few hours to spare. i made the mounts from 1 1/4" x 3/8" flat stock that was laying around, and i used 2 nuts and bolts on each end to mount it to the aluminum bar that i cut. the car seems alot more solid in the back. but it almost feels like the back doesnt want to turn when i turn a corner, but that might be my imagination, or the fact that the roads are wet tonight . like it said this is the prototype and its not totaly finised yet, but heres some pics.

i do have one concern with mounting the brace to the shock shaft. you are transferring the lateral G-force from one side of the car and focusing it on that 12mm thick shaft and my concern is that you may sheer off the top and of course danger would ensue!

if you can mount to the shock tower, it's much safer, drilling is likely

well like i said ive seen ones for the lanos and the astra mk2 adn they all mounted on the shock bolt its self, this one is a prototype so if its not correct ill make it right, we will see, if this works right i have enough to make a second one if ther is any one interested in a rear strut bar for their lanos

this is OMP rear strut bar for a mk3 astra but is basicly the same as the mk2

i was looking around on astra-mk2.com. i guess there are alot of people that think the rsb for the astra mk2 is a crock of sh_t, my car seems to feel more stable so i think i like it.

I've never liked the idea of either, drilling into the strut tower or mounting it to the top of the shock. Anyone know of anyone who's experienced sheering the top of the shock off?

I'd mount it to the shock. There isn't enough flex back there to shear one off. The main stress point of the rear swing arm is under the back seat.

Looks like you did a nice job with that. If you don't find any takers on here and it's just laying about, I wouldn't mind having a rear strut bar. Of course I still want a front strut bar too.

go ahead and rub it in garret, i dont have a welder (that works) right now so i cant weld any thing, but the one i made sure makes a hell of a difference in the rear i dont care what any one else says, it helps the rear.

i agree, anytime you can make the chassis more ridged there will be an improvement.

by the way i don't think i said it but for a test piece it looks pretty good
