Hi my friend's 2000 Leganza has loose steering, also a "thumping" sound you can hear, and feel in the steering wheel. It has about a 2 inch worth of play at the steering wheel. Typically when stopping hard on the freeway it does the "thumping" or "knocking" rapidly, like a shopping cart caster wheel whacking back and forth? What can this be? I am thinking it could be the steering rack? ARE other Daewoo cars' PS racks COMPATIBLE? My local salvage yard only has a Nubria or Lanos... and the problem is not bad enough for a New $350 rack! but the loose steering is still annoying! Thanks for any help, David
(((History on the car: was in an accident, although not a bad enough hit to deploy airbags, enough to burst the radiator.)))

PS pump or rack?
The steering isn't providing much assist either. Mostly noticeable at or near a stopped speed. The fluid level is fine, and there is no PS pump whining. It has more assist than engine off. Also, slightly more assist, if engine revved in park or neutral.
How do I determine if the problem is the PS pump or rack??
