Suspension tunning; rebound

Post by kinkyllama »

Okay...I'm still slowly trying to dial in my suspension. Currently I'm trying to give it a better ride quality. I have the car as low as it will possibly go (maybe 4-5" lower than stock). I have the shocks on the softest part possible. Now I just need to tune the rebound. But how does the rebound effect handling? I know how it affects the ride. If my understanding is correct for a comfortable ride you want the softest rebound setting without bottoming out. But what about performance? How does rebound effect body roll, turn in, overall handling, slow turns, fast turns, sweepers, ect. I know on the track I go to most I have keep the shocks about half a turn away from the stiffest setting because on a certain carousel corner the car starts bouncing and loses grip slightly.

Thanks for all your input guys. I couldn't find to much good info on the net.

Thanks. I go back and forth on if I like the wing or not...but fact is it helps out on the track so I wouldn't think of taking it off.

I started playing with the rebound and I think I figured it out. I just dont completly understand how you'd tune it for the track. I'm guessing just the highest setting then back off untill the car doesnt have too much bump to where it loses traction. I was looking in the KW manual and it's saying something about a bump adjustment along with the rebound but I don't see where to adjust that.

3-way. But in the manual it says you can adjust those 3 things, plus the bump setting. But not much of the manuals in English and it doesnt explain it furthur...just how to adjust it but not even where the adjustment is.

So can anyone give advice on how to tune the rebound for the track?

Also, does the ride heith effect ride quality at all? Like, if every other setting (stiffness, rebound, ect) is the same does it make a difference if the car is 2" off the ground or 6"?

You have to find the balance between hard and soft that maximizes your times.

If you rebound is too hard (fast), the car will bounce which is bad in terms of handling and power control

If you rebound too soft (slow), the sway bars are the only thing controlling the roll stiffness of the car. This may or may not be a bad thing, depending on the particular roll rate you're after.

One weekend when you aren't soing anything, you REALLY need to put eveything into susprog and figure out where your centers are and what rates you move at so that you can weight tune and shock tune later. I know that you can't do corner weights yet, but knowing the info like caster, wheel rate, etc will help you tune, and will help me explain and offer up some things for you to calculate for better tuning.

Might also want to take a 100 bucks and buy a book called "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" or RCVD for short.
