Help with rolling lips

Post by cpd »

Hi guys,

I just scored some rims for my 1.5i (http://users.on.net/hoogs/simmons.jpg), and I need to roll in the back lip inwards, cause the tyre is a lot wider (175/70 13 to 205/50 15).

Do I just use a rubber mallet while the car is jacked up? I don't really know how to do it, so just asking for help before I go destroying.

Or would a better option be just to cut the lip off with a dremel or something and smooth the edge?

I've heard of people doing it with a baseball bat or a pvc pipe... just rolling it back and forth until the lip is bent up.

Hmm. Cause all I want to do is make it
from this: |_
to this: |/

Or even flatter.

Bah!

It's the rear arch, so it's not exactly round, so I can't just get one of those guard rollers to do it.

Double post, but:

Got the front ones on cause there's no worry about rubbing.

They're lovely Simmons rims; 3-piece construction, very lightweight. Apparently they were meant for racing. Hmm.

Can you get narrower tyres?

If you change from 205/50/15 to 195/50/15 they will be narrower and will have more clearance.

A local paint & body shop rolled up the fender edges and flaired the rear arches out on my Lanos for $40 so my new tyres don't scrape.

Yeah, only problem is 195/50's are like $100AU. :(

But they kinda need new tyres anyway... all of em. :P

i like B45's..... anyways, if you are going to roll yout guards, use a heat gun ($15 for a 800w one from bunnings) so you dont crack the paint cause you dont want rust, and wollongong is on the ocean, and salt is bad

I'm kinda off the ocean, but I've worked something out with my dad, we're gonna fishoil it every 3 months.

When rolling the guards, we flared the guards out as well to give a little more room; I'll be going back to 195/50 from 205/50, so it'll be perfect then.

Pics!

Ignore the shit under my side mirror in the second shot. Was Armour-All, leaked off my side mirror. :(

They're really lightweight, so the car seems to pick up a lot quicker.

Add that to the fact that I got a new Blitz air filter last night for free... :D

$100 for all four, plus shitty rubber. :P

Apparently they sold new for $1500 (just rims)? I dunno.

I officially hate you... :p

Can't you widen the fenders so you can stick with 205s ?

I'm slowly rolling them out with a wooden baseball bat, but having trouble, cause the only time I have to do it is in the morning, and my parents have gone to work.

I might get them to help me out when I get home though... Hmm.
