Wing...

Post by kinkyllama »

Well i've been looking to a wing for more down force. I should be able to be reaching speeds of 130mph each lap on most tracks once i get a few more things done to my car so areo is playing a huge roll.

I plan on also doing a front air dam. Anyways i have a few questions.. another racer is selling his wing and i want some input to find out if its worth buying.

My trunk deck is about 47 inches.. my car is about 53inches.. the wing is about 57 long and about 11inches high. Its very light and has 3 slots to adjust. Its cord length is about 10"inches.. i dont know what that is either. He is asking $320usd and i dont know what shipping will be yet cuz he lives far away. Kinda of expensive i think but i like the wing alot.

Anyways.. inputs always good
Thanks,
Danny

EDIT: Ive looked online and wings like this cost from $430-$1,700usd w/o shipping.

if your just looking for a basic aluminum wing even adjustable like that one. go to ebay. you find one a lot cheaper for like probably $50 or so. $320 is very expensive its probably a name brand kind. nothing wrong with no brand ones so go the ebay route unless some one gives you a reason other wise.

used wing = sag (caused by vibration... every wing on the planet vibrates like crazy at certain speeds)

front splitter is the best idea... save money and buy it

then save up for the rear wing (get a new one)

dont' waste your time on ebay wings... cheap does not mean effective or good... and unless you take serious time to tune it, adjustable just means it'll slow you down because you don't think you are getting enough df or too much and crank it too far out of whack...

i'm a busy, lazy fool and still haven't finished the aero on the suzuki... i have all the info and the 3d models... i just need to find 4 or 5 solid hours

The wing cost about $550 new he said. It was actually bought in Japan while his friend was on vacation and gave it to him

Whats the difference between a used wing costing 200$ less and a new one thats just going to be used anyways. I drive on the freeway daily.. i usually cruise at 100-120mph so i dont think the sag issue with a used one is a big deal. Im just going to make a new one like that in no time at all.

the problem with sag (metal fatigue) really occurs because when the wing is removed from the car. the two struts which support the wing shift and adjust to take the force and almost go through a "bedding" process. the problem is that when the struts are attached to a new car, they are not stressed in the same way... and thus you get metal fatigue. you don't want fatigue to reach dangrous levels and have your wing fly off and kill innocent people behind you on the freeway (seen a wing come off at 90mph on a mercedes AMG55 cause it was used)

you can get used... i'd just be careful i guess, check it for excessive vibration, strut shift, and leaning (where the trunk lid will be dented in the rear and pulled up in the front, or where the struts turn away from straight)
